The third leg of tennis' Grand Slam, the French Open is always one of the most highly-anticipated moments of the year. There's a slew of unpredictability on the clay courts, and this could be a year with all sorts of upsets in both the men's and women's draws.
The French Open will begin on Sunday, May 28, 2017 and continue through the finals on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at Roland Garros. Live matches will be seen throughout the tourney on the ESPN family of networks, the Tennis Channel and NBC.

A Look Back
The women's side of all of these major tournaments always turns out to be strange, and 2016 wasn't an exception. Serena Williams has transcended so much of this over the years, but with her pregnancy, she won't be at Roland Garros this year. Garbine Muguruza is the defending champion after she went through the entire tournament losing just one set – the first one she played against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Sam Stosur had one of her better runs in her career to reach the 2016 French Open semis, and she was joined by Kiki Bertens. Four of the last eight were unranked, and though that seems like it should be strange, it really isn't on the women's side of the draw. Nine of the 32 ranked players were beaten in the first round.
Novak Djokovic captured the men's title over Andy Murray, and that wasn't all that surprising. Seven of the last eight players in the quarterfinals were ranked No. 13 or better. The one notable absentee from that bunch? The man who is favored to win the French Open this year by an odds-on margin, Rafael Nadal. Nadal withdrew from the tournament in the third round after two dominant matches to start in the opening week. Roger Federer, who won't be in the field in 2017, also didn't play in 2016 at Roland Garros.
Players To Bet
Rafael Nadal – Why not with Nadal? He's still the king of clay, and we think this is about as good of a price as we're going to see on him at -125. Nadal is No. 4 in the bracket behind Murray, Djokovic and Wawrinka, and assuming he stays healthy, he's going to be favored in every match he'll play here at Roland Garros aside from perhaps against Djokovic in a prospective finale.
Garbine Muguruza – The Spaniard could make this a double for her homeland. We're actually a little surprised she isn't the favorite to win this event at a price of 9 to 1. She won this event last year and has been a quarterfinalist in three straight French Opens. She's been a little boom-or-bust in these major tournaments in the past, but who hasn't? With Williams out of the equation, this is really anyone's tourney.
Players To Fade
Andy Murray – There's a reason why Murray is a 12 to 1 choice to win the French Open. He's never won the French Open in his career, and his 79 percent winning percentage is lower than in any of the other majors. He hasn't been good of late in spite of the fact that he's moved up to No. 1 in the world.
Simona Halep – It's not so much than we think Halep can't win the French Open; she can. But the problem is that she isn't worth this price of +300. Don't get sucked into this. There isn't a player not named Serena Williams who is worth being +300 in any WTA Tournament at this point. In fact, we're not sure there's a player who is worth being anything better than about 7 to 1.
