ODDS ANALYSIS
One only needs to look at the ATP Rankings to realize just how important this event is. Only one of the Top 10 ranked players in the world won't be here at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, that being No. 6 Kei Nishikori, a man who much prefers playing on hard courts and grass courts to the clay we'll see here in Monte Carlo.
Of course, any tournament which Novak Djokovic enters, he's favored in, and this won't be an exception. He's 28-1 this year with four championships already under his belt, the one loss in which he retired in the second set against Feliciano Lopez in Dubai a month and a half ago.
However, with this tournament coming on clay courts, Rafael Nadal is sure to be the second favorite instead of Andy Murray, Roger Federer or Stanislas Wawrinka.
A LOOK BACK
Last year, Nadal and Djokovic met in the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Many figured that the Spaniard would be able to get past one of his main contenders in that match, but Djokovic made short work of him, finishing as a triumphant 6-3, 6-3 winner to setup the final with Tomas Berdych.
Berdych made it into the third set with the Djoker, but the top player in the world ultimately survived in a very tight match with just one break separating each of the three sets.
Murray skipped this event last year. Federer was bounced in straight sets by Gael Monfils in the third round.
PLAYERS TO BET
Novak Djokovic – Because why not? Djokovic gets an extra bye in this tournament as the top seed, and he's one of just two players who get to enter in the second round instead of the first. On top of that, he'll probably face a qualifier in Round 2, and his first seeded opponent would be Monfils in the third round. Now, it's entirely possible that the Frenchman who loves playing on clay could catch Djokovic napping just a bit, but it really isn't all that likely.
David Ferrer – Ferrer meanwhile, is much better suited to play on clay than some of the men he's set to run into in Monte Carlo next week. He was only a quarterfinalist last year because he ran into Nadal at that point, but out of the No. 7 seed, he'll have to face Richard Gasquet and Andy Murray to get into the semifinals, where he'd likely clash with Wawrinka. It's a favorable draw for sure for Ferrer, as he's staying away from all of the top guns until the quarterfinals, and given the choice of the men to see in the Round of 8, Murray is probably the one we'd want to see most on clay.
PLAYER TO FADE
Andy Murray – We're just not into Murray on clay. He clearly prefers playing on grass or on hard surfaces. There's a reason he didn't enter this tournament last year, and there's a reason his history at the French Open is spotty at best with three semifinals appearances and no trips to the finale. With Ferrer potentially waiting in the quarterfinal stage and perhaps Djokovic in the semis, we just don't see an easy path ahead for the Brit in Monte Carlo.
