Alexander Zverev is favored to win the Shenzhen Open, which begins on Monday, September 25 in China. Zverev is the top seed and listed at odds of +140 to win this event, while David Goffin is the second seed, and the second choice in the betting at odds of +350. Only one other player is listed at single-digit odds, as Mischa Zverev is listed at +900. Let’s look at this event, tennis odds and tennis picks.

Top Contenders
The top four seeds for this event are Alexander Zverev, David Goffin, Mischa Zverev and Paolo Lorenzi. All four players have byes into the second round. It is hard to see Alexander Zverev getting tested until the semifinals where he could be matched up against Mischa Zverev. If that matchup does occur, the underdog could be worth taking as Mischa is 2-0 in his career against Alexander. The bottom half of the draw looks to be wide open, as Goffin doesn’t inspire any confidence and Lorenzi hasn’t had a lot of success on fast surfaces. Taking a longshot could be the way to go in the bottom half of the bracket.
Seeds
- Alexander Zverev
- David Goffin
- Mischa Zverev
- Paolo Lorenzi
- Alexandr Dolgopolov
- Damir Dzumhur
- Joao Sousa
- Donald Young
Matchups to Watch
The first round matchup between John Millman and Damir Dzumhur is a good one and the winner could be a live darkhorse in the top half of the bracket. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two players. The winner would likely face Marcel Granollers in the round of 16. Millman and Granollers have never played but Dzumhur is 2-1 in his career against Granollers. As noted earlier, if it is a matchup between the Zverevs’, Mischa has won two of the three career matchups.
In the bottom half, keep an eye on the possible matchup between Jeremy Chardy and Donald Young. They have split their previous two meetings and the winner of this match could be a challenger to second seed David Goffin. Chardy beat Goffin in their only previous meeting, while Goffin beat Young in their previous matchup. If it happens to be Lorenzi vs. Goffin in the semifinals, it has been all Goffin, as he has won the previous two meetings.
Although I think an upset in the bottom half of the bracket is very possible, if the seeds hold up it would be Alexander Zverev vs. David Goffin in the final. These two have split their previous two matches.
Event Notes
This tournament is being held for the fourth time and is part of the ATP World Tour 250 Series. The event takes place at the Shenzhen Longgang Tennis Center in Shenzhen, China from September 25 to October 1. The two previous winners of this event are Andy Murray who won in 2015 and Tomas Berdych who won in 2015 and 2016.
Tennis Picks
The courts in Shenzhen are considered very fast and that helps the big servers. The last two years it was Berdych taking advantage of the fast surface and winning this event. The odds are extremely top heavy so that means taking a couple of longshots could prove profitable. I think Marius Copil has a lot of value at odds of +2500. He likes the fast surfaces and he should do well in Shenzhen. He is in the bottom half of the draw and that means he would avoid the top seed Zverev and get Lorenzi or Goffin who both prefer slower surfaces. I will take Mischa Zverev at odds of +900 and Copil at odds of +2500.
