A Look Back

The men's side of the U.S. Open last year was completely chalk. All eight of the quarterfinalists were ranked in the Top 20, and 26 of the 32 third round players were ranked, an almost unprecedented string of good fortune for favored players. When the dust settled, it was Novak Djokovic storming to the championship in impressive fashion in four sets over Roger Federer in the final.

For as remotely predictable as the men's U.S. Open was in 2015, the women's U.S. Open was a complete crapshoot. Roberta Vinci came out of nowhere to reach the finale of the event, and she was beaten by her countrywoman Flavia Pennetta in an all-Italian final. Serena Williams, who was on a quest at the time to complete the Grand Slam in 2015, came up two matches short by losing in the semis to Vinci in one of the biggest upsets of the year.

Players To Bet

Serena Williams – There's no doubt that Williams isn't done winning majors even though she's had a rough year from that standpoint and had a bad tournament at the Olympics. The fact that she's still the big favorite in every match she plays makes her worthwhile to bet upon to win this event as the chalk, even at a low price of just +135.

Novak Djokovic – It's hard to say that the this is the trendiest selection in the world, but after Djokovic was upset by Juan Martin Del Potro in the Olympics in the first round, we can only forecast vengeance for the top seed. The Djoker is sure to be back, and he's much better served playing in these five-setters than in best-of-three formats.

Players To Fade

Garbine Muguruza – The time is going to come when Muguruza becomes awesome on every surface, but she doesn't have the game quite yet for the hard courts. She was beaten in the second round of the U.S. Open last year, and we wouldn't be shocked if she ends up with a relatively early exit this year as well.

Kei Nishikori – There's this stigma out there that the Nishikori is a top hard court player. That might end up being true one day, and he surely looked good heading into the Australian Open at the start of the year, but he just hasn't panned out thus far in 2016. He was a first round casualty last year in the U.S. Open, and though we don't think that's how this is playing out in this tournament, it's a stretch to see him getting into the last eight as we see it.
