The potential matchup between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer is still on track in the US Open, but unfortunately the two will not be in the final, as a semifinal matchup is the best we can hope for. While their side of the draw is pretty much holding to form, the other side is a complete mess, with none of the top seeds remaining. On the women’s side, the top seed Karolina Pliskova is still alive, as is the betting favorite, No. 3 seed Garbine Muguruza, and not to be forgotten is Maria Sharapova who upset No. 2 seed Simona Halep in the first round.

Men’s Fourth Round Matchups
R. Nadal (1) vs. A. Dolgopolov
D. Goffin (9) vs. A. Rublev
R. Federer (3) vs. P. Kohlschreiber (33)
J. del Potro (24) vs. D. Thiem (6)
S. Querrey (17) vs. M. Zverev (23)
P. Lorenzi vs. K. Anderson (28)
D. Shapovalov vs. P. Carreno Busta (12)
L. Pouille (16) vs. D. Schwartzman (29)
The men’s draw is all about the potential semifinal matchup between Nadal and Federer. Neither player has looked unbeatable so far, as Federer had to go five sets in his first two matches, while Nadal trailed Leonardo Mayer in his third round match. Nadal even said after his win over Mayer that he hopes the win is the turning point for him. "I hope that the last three sets can be a good turning point for me," Nadal said after the win, "In my opinion, I played much better later in the match today than the two previous days."
Federer finally had an easy match, as he defeated Feliciano Lopez in the third round, winning in straight sets. "I was happy I had good energy," Federer said after the win, "because I think that was my biggest worry: that somehow after the two five-setters that I had, I was going to feel a little slow, hard to throw the engine on, you know, that I would have to force myself so much I would get tired from that."
Nadal has the easier path to the semifinals, as he has just one seeded player he could face in either No. 9 David Goffin or No. 18 Gael Monfils. Federer would have to face No. 24 Juan Martin del Potro or No. 6 Dominic Thiem in the quarters. The bigger challenge for Nadal could be against Alexandr Dolgopolov who has beaten him twice in eight matches. "He has the ability to hit the ball very quick and to take the ball very early," Nadal said. "So if I am not playing aggressive, I (won't be) playing long. If I let him play from good positions, then it's going to be very, very difficult."
The bottom half of the draw is completely wide open and someone is going to make the final and likely go against either Nadal or Federer. Pablo Carreno Busta is the highest seed left at No. 12. It means that for just the 13th time since the U.S. Open in 2006 there will be a player competing in their first major final. American Sam Querrey is the only player in the bottom half of the draw who has even made a Grand Slam semifinal.
Women’s Fourth Round Matchups
K. Pliskova (1) vs. J. Brady
C. Vandeweghe (20) vs. L. Safarova
E. Svitolina (4) vs. M. Keys (15)
D. Kasatkina vs. K. Kanepi
C. Suarez Navarro vs. V. Williams (9)
P. Kvitova (13) vs. G. Muguruza (3)
J. Goerges (30) vs. S. Stephens
A. Sevastova (16) vs. M. Sharapova
The women’s side has been going more to form, although Halep did lose to Sharapova in the first round. The top seed, Pliskova hasn’t looked that good but she did come back from a match point down to beat Shaui Zhang 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the third round.
Pliskova is the top seed but the betting favorite is the No. 3 seed Muguruza. While those two players are the highest remaining seeds, the player getting the most attention is Sharapova. She is ranked 146th in the world because she hasn’t played that much coming off her suspension. Sharapova has been able to withstand the pressure and is a serious threat to win the title.
Also in the mix on the women’s side is Venus Williams who is looking to win the title 20 years after she made the final in her US Open debut. A number of other Americans are looking to make their mark including CoCo Vandeweghe, Sloane Stephens and Jennifer Brady.
