Since Novak Djokovic won in 2018, there have been five different individual winners on the men?s side of the US Open. Last year, Djokovic won for the first time in five years. It appears as though the baton has been passed with the loss of Novak Djokovic in last year?s Gentlemen?s singles final. Carlos Alcaraz won his first Wimbledon title besting the betting favorite in five sets. At the time Alcaraz was ranked No. 1 in the world by ATP, so I guess it wasn?t a complete shock. Now in his late 30s time is running out on Djokovic to match Roger Federer for most Wimbledon singles titles and as the tournament nears we still don?t know if Djokovic is going to play due to a knee injury that forced him to withdraw from the French Open last month.

Djokovic sustained a torn meniscus in his right knee shelving him in the fourth round at Roland Garros. He underwent surgery shortly after that and it?s now a race against time whether he?ll be fit enough to play. Despite not knowing his status, early betting lines had Djokovic listed as the third favorite behind Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who opened as co-favorites. There is a significant drop in odds after the top three with Alexander Zverev the fourth favorite listed at +1400. You have to think if Djokovic plays he?ll be ready. The No. 2 ranked player in the world recently said, ?If I know I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I?ll play. If not, then I?ll give somebody else a chance to play.?

The uncertainty surrounding the health of Djokovic allows players like Alcaraz, Sinner and even Alexander Zverev, Hubert Hurkacz, Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud a chance to sneak into the winner?s circle. If he does compete it would be hard not to back Djokovic, though, especially considering his domination on grass where he?s won nearly 86 percent of his matches. That didn?t help him last year, though, when Djokovic lost a five-set thriller to Alcaraz.

There is a concern about Djokovic?s recent play as well with Father Time perhaps catching up with him. In seven tournaments this year he?s yet to reach a final falling in the round of 32 twice. He also lost in four sets to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the Australian Open. Sinner went on to defeat Daniil Medvedev for the title in Melbourne rallying to win the final three sets.

With a record of 38-3 and wins in Rotterdam, Miami and Germany along with the Australian Open, Sinner elevated to the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings. However, two of those losses were against Alcaraz in the semifinals at Roland Garros and Indian Wells. I?d have a much easier time backing Sinner if he had just an iota of success against Alcaraz, but his losing career record of 4-5 gives me some concern.

With early odds of +6600 Casper Ruud is an intriguing candidate. He?s reached the semifinals in seven tournaments this year with wins in Geneva and Barcelona while going 39-10. He?s yet to win a Grand Slam event and hasn?t had much success at Wimbledon failing to advance past the second round in his last four tries.

I?d like to think Djokovic still has something in the tank and you know he?s going all out if he can play. However, signs are there that the game has deteriorated with his age. Of course he?s been the best in the world for some time so the dropoff isn?t as significant as you might think. Alcaraz is another solid choice after winning the French Open in early June. However, a loss at the Queens to Jack Draper in the second round is concerning. It?s hard to imaging one of the top three not winning and my money is on Sinner for his first Grand Slam title.

The Ladies side at Wimbledon appears to be a little more wide open with six players positioned with odds of 15/1 or shorter on the early line. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, however, is not the favorite ceding that spot to Aryna Sabalenka. And to prove the point that the draw is open one look no further than defending champion Marketa Vondrousova, who was ranked No. 40 ahead of last year?s tournament. The first unseeded winner on the Ladies side at Wimbledon, Vondrousova went off at 80/1 for her first Grand Slam title. Last year?s win and a strong season so far has moved Vondrousova to No. 6 in the rankings and she?s the sixth favorite on the early line.

Starting with Serena Williams? win in 2016 there have been seven different winners in the last seven tournaments. The 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID. And the likelihood of that trend continuing is strong with the top two favorites Sabalenka and Swiatek looking for their first win at the All England Club. I guess if anyone deserves a title Ons Jabeur is the likely candidate. She reached her second straight final last year falling in straight sets to Vondrousova. She lost the 2023 Ladies singles title to Rybakina in three sets after winning the first. It?s been a struggle so far this season for the No. 10 ranked player, though. Jabeur is just 14-12 this year with three losses to Coco Gauff.

Coming in as the betting favorite last year, Swiatek was hoping to overcome her issues on grass. She succeeded, somewhat. While she didn?t win, the WTA?s top ranked player had her best finish at Wimbledon advancing to the quarterfinals before losing to Elina Svitolina in three sets. Last year she nearly doubled her number of match wins going 4-1 to improve to 9-4 at the All England Club. By comparison Swiatek is 35-2 on the clay at Roland Garros winning her third straight French Open in June.

Sabalenka has enjoyed more success on grass than Swiatek and also has a Grand Slam win taking the Australian Open without losing a set in January. Sabalenka beat Qinwen Zheng 3 and 2 for her second straight win in Melbourne. She?s also reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in her last two starts falling in three sets to Karolina Pliskova in 2021 and Ons Jabeur in 2023. In both matches Sabalenka won the first set.

Considering what happened last year and the struggles of several favorites on grass, glancing down the odds board could lead to a nice payday. Ranked No. 5 by the WTA, Jessica Pegula was in danger of falling behind the top four until a win in Germany in June, which, by the way, came on grass. Pegula beat Gauff in straight sets in the semis before taking out Anna Kalinskaya. In Mexico late last year Pegula took out Rybakina, Sabalenka and Gauff in straight sets before losing to Swiatek in the final.

Wimbledon Championship Picks

Vondrousova came out of nowhere to win last year, but we typically see the top ranked players battling it out. Pegula is in good form heading in, but here game has always been too inconsistent. I like the fact that Swiatek made strides last year seemingly overcoming here issues on grass and she has dominated Sabalenka in their head-to-head meetings if it comes down to that. Still, after so many issues at Wimbledon it?s time for Swiatek to show why she?s ranked No. 1.
