ESPN2 is going to be the broadcast home for the 2016 MLS All-Star Game as the best in the MLS take on Arsenal at Avaya Stadium in San Jose. The match will take place on Thursday, July 28.
The one thing that MLS hasn't really figured out yet is how to truly make proper selections for its All-Star Game. On one hand, you want your superstars to be playing in the match whether those players truly deserve it or not. What's happening though, is that deserving players are being left out of the squad all the time, and the end result is that the Americans aren't fielding the same type of team which they have the ability of doing.
The format of the MLS All-Star Game is just like a regular soccer match. The two teams will play 90 minutes against each other, and if the match is level after 90 minutes, the two go to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
Typically, the All-Star Game is a higher scoring affair. Each of the last six MLS All-Star Games have featured at least three goals, though this pales in comparison to what we saw when this game was nothing but MLS players going against each other. In 2000, the two teams combined for a record 13 goals as the East beat the West 9-4. The following year, the squads split 12 goals, and that's when the decision was made to try out the MLS against a visiting club.
The MLS All-Stars have won their last two All-Star Games against world teams, and they're 9-4 overall against clubs of bigger stature. Of course, it should be noted that this game always means more to the MLS teams than it does to the clubs who are coming to town, and for the most part, the visitors haven't even played a game at that point in their preseason and are often far more worried about the International Cup of Champions or their upcoming seasons.
