2014 Hall of Fame Tennis Championships Resuls
HEWITT COMPLETES NEWPORT DOUBLE
Lleyton Hewitt claimed the singles and doubles titles at the same event for the first time on Sunday at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport.
He claimed his 30th ATP World Tour title after edging second seed Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(3) in the singles final, and then partnered with fellow Australian Chris Guccione to defeat Jonathan Erlich and Rajeev Ram 7-5, 6-4.
The triumph put the 33-year-old in elite company as Hewitt became the fourth active player with 30-or-more singles titles, joining Roger Federer (79), Rafael Nadal (64) and Novak Djokovic (45). Hewitt, playing his 10th final on grass (8-2), added a fifth different grass-court trophy to his collection (also Queen's, Halle, 's-Hertogenbosch, and Wimbledon).
2013 Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships Results
Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, who was a wild card entry into the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, won the tournament title today, defeating 2012 finalist and No. 4 seed Lleyton Hewitt 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
Mahut, who will move back into the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday as a result of the victory, won his first ATP World Tour title last month at the Topshelf Open, which is also played on grass courts. He was a finalist in Newport in 2007.
"A month ago I was playing to make the cut for the qualies at the US Open, I was ranked 240 with some points to defend. I told my coach, I have to play great on grass to make the cut for the qualies. A month later, I have two titles," he said.
The championship victory was one of three wins that Mahut recorded today. He started the day in a semifinal match versus Michael Russell, in which Mahut prevailed 6-2, 6-2.
Mahut, who famously contested the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon in 2010, then went on to a successful doubles semifinal. He partnered with his compatriot Edouard Roger-Vasselin to defeat Marcelo Demoliner and Andre Sa of Brazil, 6-4 7-6(4).
2012 Tournament Results - John Isner topples Lleyton Hewitt to capture the title
Top seed, John Isner of USA, succeeded in defending his Newport title by beating Australia's former world number one player, Lleyton Hewitt, in straight sets 7-6(1), 6-4 in the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships final on Sunday. Isner completed the win in an hour and 32 minutes, capturing his first title of this season.
Before this, the American had lost a couple of finals in this season at the BNP Paribas Open and US Men's Clay Court Championship. This was Isner's fourth career title from 11 final appearances.
Coming back to the recent match, Isner and Hewitt served remarkably well in the first set, as they did not lose it till the end, levelling the score at 6-6 and taking it to a tie-breaker. However, the American contestant played almost error free after that, allowing Hewitt to claim only one point and grabbing it 7-6(1).
Isner and Hewitt started the second set by holding their opening serves to square off the score at 1-1. The American player struck in the third game and consolidated on it to go up 3-1. Isner did not allow the 2002 Wimbledon champion to make a comeback, maintaining his lead till the end to capture it 6-4.
