2014 Internazionali BNL D'Italia Results

Novak Djokovic defeats Rafa Nadal to win his third Rome Masters

Novak Djokovic is the Rome Masters 2014 champion. The Serbian star beat Rafa Nadal 4-6 6-3 6-3 to put his name on the trophy for the third time.

World no.1 Nadal looked in charge from the off as he took the first set, but Djokovic dug deep to defeat him and claim his 44th title. In total Nadal twice broke Djokovic inside the opening five games to take control with a 4-1 lead. But Djokovic soon had his own break as he pegged his opponent back to 4-2.

A huge ace from the Serb saw him hang on in the set at 5-4 before Nadal kept his cool to close it out after 47 minutes. Djokovic then benefitted from a purple patch of his own in the second set. Some stunning cross-court shots had Nadal chasing.

And when the Spaniard double-faulted at 5-2 down Djokovic seized the advantage to force a third. The upper hand remained with Djokovic at the start of the final set, but Nadal kept fighting got to 3-3. But that was as far as he would get as Djokovic staged a remarkable comeback to lift the trophy.

Serena Williams takes Italian Open title

Serena Williams beat home favourite Sara Errani to lift her third Rome Masters trophy. The world no.1 was made to work hard to take the first set 6-3 against the golden-girl of Italian tennis on Foro Italico's Centre court.

But after Errani suffered a thigh injury Williams raced to a 6-0 win in the second set to take the title. It is the third time the American has won the tournament and each year she has won in Rome she has gone on to win the French Open (2002, 2013).

2013 Internazionali BNL D'Italia Results- Rafael Nadal destroys Roger Federer in Italian Open final

Roger Federer admitted he had no answer to Rafael Nadal's masterclass after the Spaniard put him to the sword to win the Internazionali d'Italia in Rome.

Nadal, competing in his eighth final in a row since returning from a seven-month injury lay-off in February, raced to a crushing 6-1 6-3 win in one hour and nine minutes to claim his third straight title and sixth of 2013.

It was the first time the pair, who have won 28 grand slam titles between them, have met in a final since the 2011 French Open, an encounter Nadal won, and the fifth seed showed his great rival no mercy again.

The clay court master was at his clinical best, converting five out of six break-point opportunities, while the Swiss had to settle for one out of two.

Federer accepted he could not live with his dominant opponent, telling the ATP website: "It didn't go how I hoped and I was missing too many easy forehands and crucial points.

Nadal's win took their head-to-head record to 20-10 in his favour.

In the women's final, world number one Serena Williams was an equally emphatic winner as she dispatched Victoria Azarenka 6-1 6-3 to claim her fourth straight title - but still refused to get carried away by her French Open hopes.

The American crushed her third-ranked opponent in one hour and 33 minutes to continue her ominous form.

It was Williams' 24th consecutive win on the WTA Tour and saw her add to the titles she has won in recent weeks in Miami, Charleston and Madrid.

The Belorussian simply had no answer to her opponent, who carved out 16 break points, taking six of them, as she dominated the Azarenka serve.

It means Williams will head into Roland Garros, where she has not got past the last eight since 2004, in the best possible form.

2011 Men's Results - DJOKOVIC DETHRONES DEFENDING CHAMPION NADAL

World No. 2 Novak Djokovic continues to marvel. A week after ending Rafael Nadal's 37-match unbeaten run on clay in the Mutua Madrid Open final, the Serbian dethroned the Spaniard in the Internazionali BNL d'Italia final with a 6-4, 6-4 win on Sunday evening in Rome.

Djokovic has now won 39 successive tour-level matches (37-0 in 2011), the sixth-longest winning streak in the Open Era. He has not been beaten since the semi-finals (l. to Federer) of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in November and has opened this season by winning seven successive titles, beginning with his second Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open (d. Murray).

After getting the better of Nadal in the finals on hard court at the BNP Paribas Open and the Sony Ericsson Open in March, many expected the Spaniard to right those wrongs come the clay-court season, during which he has been utterly dominant in recent years. Not so.

2011 Women's Results - Maria Sharapova defeats Sam Stosur

Maria Sharapova defeats Sam Stosur 6-2, 6-4 and wins the 2011 Internazionali BNL d'Italia! Incredible display from the three-time Grand Slam champion. Stosur played into her hands with her kick-service but Sharapova was on top form today, despite the cold, windy conditions and the delay. She's a threat at the French, and if she wins there, she will have complete her career Grand Slam. What a prospect!
