2014 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open Results

Rafa Nadal wins his fourth title in Madrid

Rafael Nadal has written his name in the Madrid history books yet again. The Balearic Islander, and world number one, lifted his fourth Mutua Madrid Open title (from the six finals he has disputed in the competition) and the 27th Masters 1000 trophy of his career after coming out on top in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 3-0) against Kei Nishikori, who after playing a fantastic first set, began to complain of back pain which caused his game to suffer to the point of eventually being forced to withdraw.

With the score in his favour, the world number 12 began the second set. After Nadal dropped his first service game, everything was set up for the Japanese man to kill off the match in the second. However, while trailing 4-3, the Spaniard got a break of his own to get the ball rolling on his fightback, which got the fans in the Caja Mágica off their feet and forced the final into a third and decisive set.

With the scoreboard level at one set apiece, and the Caja Mágica on its feet to support the local hero, Nishikori's muscular problems became more apparent. The third set between the circuit's two most in form players got underway, but it would only last for three games. Nishikori withdrew to give Nadal the 63rd title of his career; his 27th Masters 1000 win and his third trophy of 2014. The next challenge for both men is the Rome Masters 1000, which will be followed by the main event of the year, the French Open.

2013 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open Results - Rafael Nadal Defeats Stanislas Wawrinka to Win Men's Final

Rafael Nadal won the 2013 Mutua Madrid Open, defeating Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets, 6-2 6-4.

The 26-year-old dominated the match from start to finish, never leaving any doubt as to who the rightful "King of Clay" is.

Although the Swiss challenger tried his hardest to stop him, Nadal pushed his lifetime record against Wawrinka to 9-0. The Spaniard is now 19-0 in total sets against the opponent.

Nadal effectively utilized his elite topspin and craftiness to dominate the competition in this event, two traits that should seamlessly carry over into the French Open, which begins later this month.

La Caja Magica was the site of this outdoor clay matchup, a fitting locale for Nadal—a Spanish native—to complete his warm-up cycle and prepare for his first Grand Slam appearance since an embarrassing second-round exit at Wimbledon 2012.

This Madrid Open victory signaled Nadal's seventh consecutive finals appearance and fifth title of the season, continuing his epic comeback since missing approximately seven months with a damaged knee.

Rafa's triumph over Wawrinka sent a strong message to the rest of the tennis world, letting his competitors know that he is back on top and has a great chance to defend his title at the upcoming French Open.
