2013 if Stockholm Open Results
Dimitrov nets first ATP championship
Grigor Dimitrov win his first ATP title Sunday with a three-set upset of world No. 3-ranked David Ferrer at the If Stockholm Open. Dimitrov, seeded seventh, was marking his second championship match appearance, having dropped a tight two-set decision to Andy Murray in January. He battled Ferrer for more than 2 hours before finishing off a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.
It was the first time in four career meetings that Dimitrov defeated Ferrer.
Ferrer managed 12 break-point chances versus Dimitrov but, after three first-set breaks, was unable to win a game off Dimitrov's serve in the last two sets. Dimitrov cashed in the only break of the second set to even the match and broke Ferrer's serve in the seventh-game of the third set and held on from there for the win.
Ferrer played just three matches this week -- he had a first-round bye and took his quarterfinal in a walkover of Fernando Verdasco -- but all went three sets. Dimitrov dropped only two sets on the week, losing the first set both in the semifinals and finals before rallying to win.
Aisam, Rojer win Stockholm doubles title
Top seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer boosted their chance of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Sunday as they captured their second title of the season. The Pakistani-Dutch duo defeated Swedes Jonas Bjorkman and Robert Lindstedt 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the If Stockholm Open.
Qureshi and Rojer started the week at seventh in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings, with the top eight teams set to qualify for the season finale in London next month. Qureshi and Rojer are looking to qualify for the second year in a row.
The 41-year-old Bjorkman was contesting his first tournament in nearly five years this week as he came out of retirement in a bid to win the Stockholm title for the fourth time with as many partners. He had first reached the Stockholm final 19 years ago in 1994 and dropped to a 54-43 finals record.
Qureshi and Rojer won the title without dropping a set, breaking serve four times in the final as they prevailed in 63 minutes. They added to their success at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Miami in April.
2012 if Stockholm Open Winner - Melo/Soares upset Lindstedt/Zimonjic to grab title
Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares of Brazil captured their fourth tour level title as a team by beating the top seeds, Robert Lindstedt and Nenad Zimonjic, in the final of the If Stockholm Open. This ATP World Tour 250 indoor hard court event was being held in Sweden.
The Brazilian tandem lost the opener against their more experienced rivals but then bounced back to equalise the match score at one set apiece and then clinched the super tie-breaker to prevail in the end with a score line of 6-7(4), 7-5, 10-6.
Lindstedt and Zimonjic made a flying start, as they captured first three games to race to a 3-0 lead. However, the Swedish-Serbian tandem could not close out the set in the ninth and also lost the next one to take the score to 5-5. The following two games went with serve, levelling the proceedings at 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. Lindstedt and Zimonjic attained a 4-1 lead and capitalised on it to triumph 7-6(4).
Both teams held their opening serves in the second set to even out the score at 1-1. Lindstedt and Zimonjic struck in the third and consolidated on it to move ahead 3-1. Melo and Soares hit back in the eighth game to square off the score at 4-4. The Swede-Serbian air failed to hold when they served to stay in the set in the 12th and went down 5-7.
Match tie-breaker went back and forth till 4-4 but then Melo and Soares pressed the accelerator, winning six of the following eight points to seal it 10-6.
The Brazilian combination needed one hour and 52 minutes to topple their higher ranked rivals.
Talking to the media people after the match, Soares said, "I am very happy. I really enjoy playing and being able to win such a tough match - coming back from a set and a break - was even better."
Melo added, "We are happy to be here and to win. We'll be back here next year."
Soares improved his win/loss record in the tour level title matches to 9-9 and Melo took it to 10-11.
