Lukas Rosol wins Winston-Salem Open Singles

The three-set thriller brought back memories of the 2011 and 2012 finals, with John Isner beating Julien Benneteau in ’11 and Tomas Berdych in ’12, after losing the first set in both matches.

Rosol took home $80,280 for the victory, while Janowicz received $45,705.

Jurgen Melzer wins Winston-Salem Open after Monfils retires

Austria's Jurgen Melzer didn't want to spend a week in New York with all the craziness surrounding the start of the U.S. Open.

Instead, Melzer spent the week training and playing in the relative quiet of North Carolina — and came away with a champion's trophy and a big jump up the world rankings.

Melzer won the Winston-Salem Open title on Saturday at the Wake Forest Tennis Center after Frenchman Gael Monfils retired because of an injury early in the second set.

Melzer earned his fifth career ATP tournament title and first this season. His ranking will improve five spots to No. 27 on Monday, when the U.S. Open begins at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The left-handed Melzer led 6-3, 2-1 after breaking Monfils' serve in the second set. During the changeover, Monfils received treatment on his left abdominal muscle and hip before opting to retire.

Isner wins second straight Winston-Salem title

ohn Isner admitted the Winston-Salem Open final wasn't the best tennis he's played this season.

Still, the end result was just what Isner hoped for - another momentum-building victory heading into the U.S. Open.

Isner won his second straight Winston-Salem title Saturday, battling through a third-set tiebreaker to beat seventh-ranked Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9).

Isner had 22 aces, but needed to overcome his own mistakes for his second win this season and fifth career title in the final hard-court tournament before the U.S. Open.

Berdych, playing in his third final this season, broke Isner's serve in winning the first set, and had three mini-breaks in the tiebreaker, the last giving him match point at 6-5.

But Isner broke Berdych on the next point to tie the score, and later went on to win the last three points.
