The Ohio State Buckeyes are in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament unless they start picking up wins in a hurry. Ohio State is 13-10 on the season and has struggled throughout the year, winning just three games in Big Ten play. Meanwhile, the Michigan Wolverines haven’t looked much better. Michigan was thought by some to have a chance to win the Big Ten this year, but now the team is hoping to just make the NCAA Tournament. A Wolverines victory here would be huge for their at-large chances....
The Creighton Bluejays have rebounded nicely after losing Maurice Watson Jr. and are once again considered the team most likely to topple Villanova for the Big East crown. Following an embarrassing loss to Georgetown, Creighton righted the ship with an easy victory against DePaul and then knocked off Butler in Indianapolis. The Bluejays will now look for a season sweep against the Xavier Musketeers on Saturday and a win will make it almost impossible for Xavier to catch them in the conference....
The Louisville Cardinals will look to pad their record on Saturday afternoon when they face the Boston College Eagles. Boston College is the second-worst team in the ACC this year and the only team with an overall losing record, sitting at 9-14. Meanwhile, Louisville is still in the hunt for a conference championship with only three losses in ACC play so far. This is a game that Louisville will be expected to win handily, but Boston College has already knocked off NC State and Syracuse in Boston this season so Louisville has to be careful....
The Georgia Bulldogs almost picked up a signature win on Tuesday night against the Kentucky Wildcats. Georgia battled Kentucky and took the No. 8 ranked Wildcats to overtime before succumbing to an excellent shooting performance from Malik Monk. This Georgia team will get another opportunity for a big win when they travel east to face the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday afternoon. A win for the Gamecocks would further strengthen their already strong case for an NCAA bid and keep them on pace with Kentucky in the SEC East....
This game was billed as showdown for the top spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference a little over a week ago. That was before the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost three straight games to fall back to the middle of the pack. Meanwhile, the North Carolina Tar Heels bounced back from a road loss in Miami to and survived a scare from Pitt by holding on for a two-point victory on Monday. The Creighton Blue Jays finally stopped the bleeding with a win over cellar dweller DePaul last week. Creighton had been on a skid since it was announced that superstar Maurice Watson Jr. was going to be out for the rest of the season with an ACL tear and the win over DePaul brought them one closer to 20. The Blue Jays will be facing an uphill battle to get to win number 20 though when they face the Butler Bulldogs on Tuesday night....
Winning in the Atlantic Coast Conference is no easy task. You can ask the Pittsburgh Panthers about that. Entering league play the Panthers had a sterling 11-2 record, but they’ve won just one of their first seven ACC matchups and dropped six straight. Pitt may have hit a new low with a 55-point home loss to Louisville last week and will have to regroup quickly with a visit to the Dean Dome to face North Carolina up next on their schedule....
As we roll into the second month of the year, it’s time to start talking about bubble teams for the NCAA Tournament. The Providence Friars are on that bubble and a win over the No. 1 ranked Villanova Wildcats will do plenty to strengthen their resume. A loss to St. John’s last week sure crippled their chances, but the Friars bounced back to knock off Marquette, a club that just posted an upset of Villanova, on Saturday. Providence has a shot at some big wins down the stretch, but this is the biggest of them all....
The Duke Blue Devils are in such a spiral that coach Mike Krzyzewski, who is still rehabbing from back surgery, has reportedly told the team it is temporarily banned from the locker room and from wearing team gear. Duke hopes to win back the trust of its coach early next week when they face off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish....
