Old School Meets New School
The Dallas Mavericks have been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. A Sports Illustrated article highlighted allegations of a hostile workplace and owner Mark Cuban also recently said publicly that tanking was the best option for the franchise. At this point it’s hard to know how well the Mavericks will be able to focus next time out when they hit the road to face the Los Angeles Lakers....
The Houston Rockets have surprised the NBA by surpassing the Golden State Warriors for the top spot in the Western Conference as the stretch run beckons. While the Rockets aren’t going to be the favorites to win the title come postseason, home court advantage throughout the playoffs would be a big help....
The Cleveland Cavaliers have looked good since their trade deadline flurry of moves, and are hoping the All-Star Break hasn’t slowed their momentum. The Cavs will be back at it this week when they host the Washington Wizards in a regular season showdown that is a key Eastern Conference matchup....
The Golden State Warriors hit the All-Star Break a half game behind the Houston Rockets for the top seed in the Western Conference. Houston badly wants to finish with the better record, but Golden State will be right on its heels. The Warriors can begin making their push with a home game this week against the Los Angeles Clippers....
The NBA Dunk Contest lost some of its luster a few years back to the point where the format was changed and its future looked murky. But the original format came back and some high flyers have brought back the excitement to the event....
Two former winners will be in the field when eight participants gear up for the NBA Three-Point Shootout this weekend. Rockets guard Eric Gordon will aim to defend his championship while 2016 winner Klay Thompson would love to pick up a second crown in three years....
The All-Star festivities will heat up on Saturday with a variety of events, including the NBA Skills Challenge. While the dunk contest and the three-point shootout are the more visible contests, the Skills Challenge is also an interesting competition to watch as it combines several different abilities into one event....
The NBA All-Star Game is full of the best players in the world, but there is also an event beforehand giving a peek at the next batch of stars. The NBA’s Rising Stars Challenge will showcase big-time talents such as the 76ers duo of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons as well as talented rookies like Donovan Mitchell and Jayson Tatum....
The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t going to make the playoffs, but they have found a groove of late. Their role down the stretch will be spoiler and that is something they will hope to pull off in a game this week against the Minnesota Timberwolves....
The Golden State Warriors are the favorites to win the Western Conference title and finish with the best record in the NBA this season, but the pesky Rockets are just a half-game back. While Golden State would still be the favorite to win the title wherever it ends up seeding-wise, the Warriors would like to finish atop the conference. They will look to stay ahead of the rest of the pack when they hit the road to face off with the Portland Trail Blazers this week....
The Boston Celtics have hit a swoon, and as a result, have been taken over for the No. 1 spot in the Eastern Conference. The Toronto Raptors now sit atop the conference and the Celtics are hoping to reclaim that positioning down the stretch. They are hoping to turn it around in a matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers next time out....
The Cleveland Cavaliers have re-tooled on the fly. It remains to be seen if all the trades done at the deadline will turn them into a legitimate title contender. It’s not easy finding chemistry in such a limited amount of time but Cleveland hopes to work it out this week against the Oklahoma City Thunder....
The Denver Nuggets have been fantastic at home this season, which has kept them in playoff contention despite poor play on the road. They hope to the home court dominance continues next time out but it won’t be easy as they host the San Antonio Spurs....
The Golden State Warriors lead in the Western Conference is slipping. For whatever reason, Golden State continues to lose games in inexplicable fashion. Although this team is without question the most talented squad in the NBA, they have now lost three of their last five and are just a couple games up on Houston for the top spot in the conference....
The last time the Phoenix Suns won a game in the Bay Area their starting point guard was Steve Nash, who tallied a double-double with 14 points and 15 assists. That was seven years ago and in between the Suns have dropped 11 in a row to the Golden State Warriors inside Oracle Arena, and 11 straight overall in the series. The good news is that Phoenix hasn’t lost to the Dubs this season. The bad news is that Monday’s tilt is the first of four games the rest of the season....
It’ll be hard to recognize the Cleveland Cavaliers when they take the floor on Sunday after their roster overhaul at the trade deadline. It was apparent that what they had wasn’t working and wasn’t going to change anytime soon, and in an effort to save their season the Cavs swapped out their entire backcourt in order for another run at the Finals. They’ll have to get by the Boston Celtics to get there, though, as the Cs continue to hold the top spot in the Eastern Conference....
The Portland Trail Blazers are looking to keep their playoff streak alive. Portland has made it to the playoffs in four straight seasons and is right in the thick of things to make it five straight. Currently, they are a game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers and a half-game ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans in the Western Conference race. With the Clippers trading Blake Griffin and DeMarcus Cousins suffering a season-ending injury, they look to be in a great position. However, they need to win winnable road games against teams like the Sacramento Kings. They will try to do just that on Friday night....
Jimmy Butler’s return to the Windy City is going to be one of the most highly anticipated games this week. The Chicago Bulls have hit rock bottom without their former star this season. They have lost seven in a row, and it would take a miracle run for them to even come close to sniffing the postseason at this point. That being said, they will be certainly motivated to knock off Butler and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night....
The Boston Celtics are looking to continue to stay atop the Eastern Conference when they travel to take on the Washington Wizards on Thursday night. Washington had been on fire until a recent loss to Philadelphia ended its winning streak, while Boston has been the best team in the East all season long. Both teams have star players dealing with injuries, so it will be interesting to see how this one shakes out....
On Tuesday night, the Oklahoma City Thunder snapped a four-game losing streak in a big way. The Thunder traveled to Oakland to take on Golden State and put on a show, dominating the Warriors on their way to a 20-point victory. It was exactly the performance we’ve come to expect out of Russell Westbrook, who dominated all night long. Westbrook and the Thunder will look to keep that intensity up when they travel south to take on the Los Angeles Lakers in another TNT game on Thursday night....
The Minnesota Timberwolves haven’t reached the postseason since the 2003-04 season, but they are on their way to ending the NBA’s longest playoff drought. The Wolves have already eclipsed last season’s win total and their 34 victories are their third-most over the past 14 seasons. One of those victories was a 127-99 thumping of the Cleveland Cavaliers last month. The Cavs have been struggling and they look to avoid being swept by the Wolves....
This doesn’t feel like the San Antonio Spurs team we’ve been accustomed to seeing over the past several seasons. And that’s because it isn’t. The Spurs have survived without former defensive player of the year Kawhi Leonard, who has played in just nine games this season. Tony Parker missed a number of games with injuries and he’s now in a reserve role. Still, the Spurs are hanging around at the top of the Western Conference and go for the season sweep of the Phoenix Suns when the teams meet for the fourth time....
For the first time in six years, the Philadelphia 76ers look set to return to the postseason. Their long-suffering fans were told to “Trust the Process”, and now Sam Hinkie’s plan is paying dividends. Philadelphia is 25-25 and in eighth place in the East at this point of the season. The young guns have looked great and are starting to come together as a unit....
The Golden State Warriors are again the team to beat this season, but they have been stumbling more than they did last year. Golden State has lost two of its last three after dropping road games to Utah and Denver, and now must face the team that wants to beat them more than anyone else....
The Golden State Warriors’ three-game road trip did not get off to a good start, as they traveled to Utah and got blown out by the Jazz. Coach Steve Kerr was not happy with the effort from his team and they should be re-focused next time out. That’s not a good thing for the Sacramento Kings, who will likely be staring down a Golden State team intent on getting back on track....
