One of the best characteristics about the Kentucky Derby is the fact that longshots have a long and storied history of winning the blanket of roses presented at the winner’s circle. The most recent of those long shot winners was Mine That Bird, the 50/1 winner of the 2009 Kentucky Derby. Giacomo was a 50/1 winner in 2005 and Charismatic took the wire at 33/1 in 1999. Bargain hunters and horse players seeking value will be looking down the board for good horses that are not the easy choices of the casual bettors.

Odds Analysis
One of the betting factors on Derby Day is ignorant public money bet by gamblers who only bet on a horse race annually on the first Saturday in May. This means that most of the top favorites for the Kentucky Derby are overlays that are bet up to the point of offering no value. With that in mind the smart money and sharps will be looking at quality underdogs and long shots.
Code of Honor
Certainly, within the underdog horses that deserve a strong look is Code of Honor. Among the reasons would be Hall of Fame trainer Claude R. McGaughey III and jockey John Velazquez. McGaughey has posted over 2000 career wins and among them are the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and the Breeders Cup Mile and Distaff. As for Velazquez has twice won the Kentucky Derby with his latest win in 2017. He has tallied eight different wins in various Breeders Cup races. Velazquez has posted over 6000 career wins and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012. As for the colt himself Code of Honor was the winner of the Grade Two Fountain of Youth and finished third in the Grade One Florida Derby that was won by top tier Derby favorite Maximum Security.
Haikal
With trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and jockey Rajiv Maragh another underdog selection that offers quality is Haikal. McLaughlin trained 2006 Horse of the Year Invasor and has won over 1350 career races. He has also posted wins in the Belmont Stakes and Breeders Cup classic. Maragh has posted over 1673 career wins including four at the Breeders Cup and several Grade One races. Haikal is best known for his win in the Grade Three Gotham and for finishing third in the Grade Two Wood Memorial.
Long Range Toddy
With trainer Steve Asmussen, Long Range Toddy also has strong leadership. Asmussen has won twice at the Preakness Stakes, once at the Belmont Stakes and twice more at the Breeders Cup Classic. Asmussen is a Hall of Fame trainer that has compiled 8000 career wins. Jockey Jon Court has over 4000 career wins. Long Range Toddy has shown the ability to go up against and beat the best as shown with his win in the Grade Two Rebel Stakes.

Code of Honor, Haikal, and Long Range Toddy each bring quality leadership and records that show they have the ability to bring better than expected vale with the potential to win the Kentucky Derby. In particular Code of Honor is a horse to take a long look at with the winning combination of McGaughey and Velazquez. Code of Honor would not be an upset winner though he will pay as if it were so.
