The race for the Triple Crown got turned upside down with the help of the COVID-19 breakout. Though the 2020 Belmont Stakes takes place just a few weeks after its originally scheduled date, it opens the Triple Crown chase for the first time. And to account for the adjusted Triple Crown schedule and the horse racing calendar in general, the distance was shortened from its normal 1 1/2 miles to 1 1/8 miles. That doesn’t make the race less meaningful as 10 of the top 3-year-old thoroughbreds attack the dirt at Belmont Park on Saturday with Tiz the Law opening as the favorite.

The field for the 152nd running took a hit when notables Nadal, Charlatan and Maxfield all withdrew for various reasons. That left Tiz the Law as the considerable favorite ahead of Sole Volante and Dr Post on the odds board, and it’s pretty clear why. Tiz the Law is the only horse among the field with a Grade 1 victory.

There are just a few horses that make an impression in the small field of 10. Obviously, Tiz the Law is one of them with a record that stands out. He’s won four of his five starts and placed third in the other. He blasted the field in his last gallop winning the G1 Florida Derby by 4 1/2 lengths back in March. Ironically, that race was the same distance as what he faces on Saturday.
In his only other race as a 3-year-old Tiz the Law claimed a 3-length victory at the G3 Holy Bull Stakes in early February with a straightforward, effortless stride. Running at Belmont is nothing new for the New York-bred horse, which may give him another advantage. Tiz the Law took home the G1 Champagne Stakes as a 2-year-old and can become the first New Yorker since 1882 to capture the Belmont Stakes.
One horse set to take advantage of the shorter distance is Tap it to Win, who appears to be the only speed horse in the field. Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, who won last year’s Belmont with Sir Winston, Tap it to Win has promising bloodlines and a more promising season after struggling as a juvenile.
Tap it to Win is sired by the legendary Tapit and he picked up the pace in his 3-year-old season with a pair of wins. He won a six furlong sprint at Gulstream in May and captured the 1 1/16 miles allowance at Belmont earlier this month. Those results came after a pair of 10th place showings last year, including in the G1 Breeder’s Futurity.
Not much separates the middle of the pack. Sole Volante, the second-favorite on the opening line, had a startling comeback in his last Belmont prep, rallying from last to win the one-mile feature at Gulfstream Park earlier this month. He’s placed among the top three in all six of his races with four victories, leading the field at the G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes in February.

With early favorites Nadal and Charlatan out of the mix the field opened up. However, it opened up for Tiz the Law, who is easily the best horse in the field. That doesn’t always guarantee a victory and I can see Tap it to Win, Dr Post or Sole Volante putting up a fight. I am fading Sole Volante, though, since his schedule has been hectic and the field much stronger. Also, a long shot but stay away from Modernist. When trainer Bill Mott wants more than nine furlongs, it’s not a good sign.
