The 2020 Kentucky Derby will be like no other. The 146th Run for the Roses had to adjust just like everything and everyone else in this torturous year, thus the race will take place on the first Saturday in September. And rather than being first in the run for racing’s Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby is second in the rotation. Tiz the Law won the Belmont Stakes back in June and heads to Louisville looking for the second jewel of the Triple Crown. At first look he’s a negative odds favorite on the opening line, however a lot can change with a just over two weeks until the thoroughbreds head to the gate.
The 2020 Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, September 5, from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and will be televised on NBC.

Barring anything major happening between now and post time, this is Tiz the Law’s race to lose. Oddsmakers are thinking along the same lines posting him as a negative odds favorite. Tiz the Law is coming off a trio of dominant Grade 1 wins looking like a prime candidate for the Triple Crown. The colt has been nearly perfect in his career with six wins in seven races.
Tiz the Law finished third at the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last November in the only race he didn’t win. Ironically, that was run at Churchill Downs. He finished behind Finnick the Fierce, who took second that day and opened as a major longshot in the Kentucky Derby.
Since that loss, Tiz the Law is unbeaten knocking off challengers he’ll likely face in the Kentucky Derby. He bested Shivaree at the Florida Derby, ran past Dr. Post and Max Player at the Belmont Stakes and defeated Caracaro and Max Player again in early August at the Travers Stakes. The Travers win was significant since it was the longest race of his career and the same 1¼ miles he’ll run in the Kentucky Derby.
The biggest challenger to Tiz the Law appears to be Art Collector, who hit the board as the second favorite. He’s galloped to five straight wins, though the competition hasn’t been as stiff. By advanced speed metrics, Art Collector has consistently been clocked slower, though the two have never been in the same race. Honor A.P. came out as the third favorite and is getting plenty of support. He’s been on the board in all five starts, but he’s yet to run 1¼ miles.
There are longshots worth taking a look at. Caracaro has a strong pedigree and is trained by Venezuelan Gustavo Delgado, a three-time winner of that country’s Triple Crown. Caracaro made just his fourth career start at the Travers Stakes finishing second to Tiz the Law. We haven’t seen enough of him to pass judgment, but his ceiling appears to be very high.
The closing speed of Major Fed might not be enough earn a victory, but he’s got it. He has yet to win a race finishing second at the G3 Indiana Derby in his last run. Major Fed showed a burst out of the pack where he was ninth at one point. He can make some noise given a good starting position and some luck.
Not many horse racing experts out there anticipate Tiz the Law losing this race. That’s what makes sports and wagering on them so exciting. Did anyone have Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson? What about the 1980 U.S. Olympic ice hockey team defeating the scary bad Soviet Union? Those are just a few examples of what can happen. What nearly always happens is one of the favorites end up victorious. In this case, the experts are probably right.
