In a vacuum, the Florida Derby is already an incredibly important race. It's the last of the prep races for the Kentucky Derby in the Sunshine State, and both the winner and second place finisher are sure to get into the field at the Run for the Roses in a few weeks.... 

Yet another spot in the Kentucky Derby will be taken on Saturday at Oaklawn Park where a whopping field of 14 go for glory at the Rebel Stakes.... 

There's a lot of attention being paid to three-year old colts this time of year, as they try to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. On Saturday though, our attention turns to the older fillies and mares that will be running in the Santa Margarita Stakes, a Grade 1 race with a hefty $500,000 prize pool.... 

Another golden ticket to the Kentucky Derby will be handed out this Saturday at the San Felipe Stakes, where a crowded field is seven legitimate contenders believe they'll cross the line first.... 

The Florida Derby is the premier race for three-year olds in Florida, but winning that race isn't the only road to the Kentucky Derby. Winning the Tampa Bay Derby would end up doing the same thing, though the winner of this one is very likely going to get shipped down to Gulfstream Park to run in the Florida Derby next month anyway.... 

For all intents and purposes, a golden ticket to the Kentucky Derby will be handed out on Saturday at the Gotham Stakes, as the winner will claim 50 Derby Points to essentially lock up a spot in the Run for the Roses.... 

The elder statesmen of the Sport of Kings will be showcased on Saturday afternoon at Gulfstream Park in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap.... 

Gulfstream Park's second to last major race for three-year olds before the Kentucky Derby takes place this Saturday, and there's no question that the overwhelming favorite of the Fountain of Youth Stakes should punch his ticket to Churchill Downs come the first week of May by claiming these 50 Kentucky Derby Points.... 

This time of year, there's a ton of focus on the three-year old colts who are trying to get into the Kentucky Derby field. However, there's a ton of great racing going on all over the country. On Saturday, three-year old filly turfers will take to the track at Gulfstream Park for the Davona Dale Stakes, a Grade 2 race with a rather large $200,000 purse.... 

For all intents and purposes, the first ticket to the Kentucky Derby will be punched on Saturday night at the Fair Grounds. Fifty points towards qualification for the Run for the Roses will be handed out to the winner of the Risen Star Stakes.... 

Rachel Alexandra was one of the best fillies of our time, and it was only a matter of time until she had a big time race named after her.There are nine fillies who are headed to post at the newly minted Rachel Alexandra Stakes at the Fair Grounds on Saturday, and the winner of this race is almost sure to be running in the Kentucky Oaks in May.... 

There aren't any Kentucky Derby points at stake for Saturday's Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, but the winner will be pointed towards the Tampa Bay Derby in March, the winner of which will gain automatic entry into the Kentucky Derby.... 

Golden Gate Fields doesn't often produce Kentucky Derby winners, but being in it with a fight is all that any of these horses running at the El Camino Real Derby could possibly ask for. The winner is very likely going to be headed off to Santa Anita for the Santa Anita Derby in a couple months, and that's where real money and a real shot to get into the Kentucky Derby can be had.... 

It's a big weekend for four-year old and older colts, as there are a number of graded stakes races just for the elder statesmen in the Sport of Kings. At Santa Anita, eight colts, many of which were Triple Crown contenders over the course of the last few years are going to take off for a mile and an eighth at the San Antonio Stakes.... 

For many, the 2016 horse racing season has yet to really get started. Many of the colts running in Saturday's Fred Hooper Stakes haven't run yet in 2016 and are prepping themselves for longer races by taking on this one-mile jaunt at Gulfstream Park.... 

A big afternoon of racing is on tap at Aqueduct on Saturday, and the most important race of the bunch is one where 10 Kentucky Derby points will be at stake. Seven will head to post at the Withers Stakes, the second prep race of the year in New York for the Run for the Roses.... 

The route to the Kentucky Derby is officially on at Gulfstream Park for the first time in 2016. The field at the Holy Bull Stakes isn't one chock full of competitors, but there are three major ponies in this field, all of which could end up being factors in the Run for the Roses come May....

Three-year old fillies will be on the track at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday afternoon in hopes of winning the Gasparilla Stakes, a race which would help propel them into the discussion for the Kentucky Oaks later on in the year.... 

The top three-year old colts in the world will all ultimately come together at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday of May for the Kentucky Derby. Golden Gate Fields hasn't produced many runners in the Derby over the years, but the winner of the California Derby is at least going to have a shot to move on to Santa Anita to run against some of the top three-year ponies out there.... 

The road to the Kentucky Derby is officially on in the Bayou.A massive field of 14 will be heading to post at the LeComte Stakes on Saturday night in a race which will help establish who the three-year old is to beat at the Fair Grounds in the prep races for the Run for the Roses.... 

Though the best three-year olds in California are all going to be passing on the first Derby prep race of the year, there are still several who are beginning their quest to break into the field at the Kentucky Derby. There aren't many Derby points up for the taking at the Sham Stakes, but the winner is sure to head to the San Felipe Stakes in February where the real fun begins on the road to the Triple Crown.... 

Before there was American Pharoah, there was California Chrome. He was the three-year old du jour who nearly captured the Triple Crown in 2014. Believe it or not, he's still on the track beginning his five-year old year, and his first offering in what will likely be his final campaign will take place at the San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday.... 

West Coast colts managed to finish 1-2 at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile this year, as both Nyquist and Swipe head into their three-year old season in fine form. However, the East Coast is sure to be represented well at the Run for the Roses as well, and Mohaymen leads the charge for what could be an interesting group of ponies elsewhere across the country.... 

We might be five months away from the Kentucky Derby, but before you know it, three-year olds are going to be lined up at the gate at Churchill Downs looking to start the same magical run which American Pharoah put on last year when he won the Triple Crown....
