The penultimate betting week of the NBA regular season concludes on Sunday, April 7 with 13 games on the slate. You know it’s a big day when the league’s television outlet NBA TV is offering up a tripleheader. Several games will have an impact on the standings and playoff seedings in each conference with the teams playing beyond the regular season already determined in the Eastern Conference. The Boston Celtics secured the top seed in the East two weeks ago and recently locked up the NBA’s best overall record. It makes you wonder how motivated they’ll be for their showdown with Portland. The C’s just whacked one of the top squads in the West beating Oklahoma City 135-100 on Tuesday.
The Houston Rockets are the only team still with a chance to squeeze into the top 10, but their chances are slim. They trail Golden State in the West and dropped further off the pace with consecutive losses following a 10-game winning streak. The Rockets take on Dallas at 3:30 p.m. ET in the first NBA TV matchup. That’s followed by an Eastern Conference tilt between Milwaukee and the Knicks at 7 p.m. ET. The Bucks just lost consecutive games to Memphis and Washington, teams with fewer combined wins than Milwaukee. Minnesota can move closer to securing first place in the West with a win over the Lakers in the last NBA TV game of the day.

My four team NBA parlay didn’t pan out last week as I split my picks. I have a few chances remaining during the season to hit one more winner and will do my best to make that happen. I’ll stick with the four-team format again looking to make a splash as the season winds down. I mentioned the Celtics and questioned their motivation after clinching the No. 1 overall seed. What interests me is that teams that qualify for the playoffs have nearly a week off while the play-in tournament is settled, so resting players isn’t beneficial. I expect the Celtics will go all out like they’ve done at home all season with only three losses. They’re also 7-1 ATS in their last eight home games so backing the Cs is a good move.
Another strong play is backing the most profitable team in the NBA. Securing a top 4 gives the Orlando Magic homecourt advantage in the first round and they’ve been good at home boasting a 27-12 record. Orlando has also secured payouts in 64.5 percent of their games making them a solid pick against the Chicago Bulls.
Joel Embiid was the front runner for NBA MVP until he went down a few months ago. With him out the Sixers tumbled down the standings, but they have a chance to make some noise with the big fella back in the lineup. In his first game since late January Embiid tallied 24 points in a win over OKC and should only get better with increased conditioning. That’s bad news for the San Antonio Spurs, who host Embiid and the Sixers. Philly is just two games out of the top 6 and I expect they’ll play with a sense of urgency and cover the betting line.
Utah crumbled over the last few months with just three victories in 24 games since reaching .500 in early February. Their nine road wins are among the fewest in the NBA and they’ve covered in less than 40 percent of their away games. Meanwhile the Warriors have caught fire down the stretch and will easily earn a payout for my four-team winner.
