The three regular season meetings between the Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns were extremely competitive with each decided by an average of just 5.0 points per game. While that remained the case through a half of play in the series opener, Phoenix would take control early in the third quarter to put the Nuggs away and cruise to the 1-0 series lead. Denver bounced back from losses to the Trail Blazers with a win and cover in both instances the previous round, and has only dropped back-to-back games three times dating back to the middle of February. Even so, Phoenix has gone 3-1 SU and ATS at home in the playoffs, and killed it for NBA bettors at home posting 27-9 SU and 23-13 ATS records at online sportsbooks during the regular season. Devin Booker and company will be tough to tame in Game 2, but the Suns have already fallen at home once this postseason after taking a 1-0 series lead. If anyone can mimic the feat and help his team pull it off again, it’s none other than Nikola Jokic – the current favorite to cash in on the MVP Award odds.

Odds Analysis
Game 1 saw the Suns log the 122-105 win and cover as 6-point favorites per the closing NBA odds; the 227 combined points surpassed the 222.5 closing total. Don’t look for linemakers to adjust the side and total much for Game 2. Remember, it was Denver that held the 58-57 halftime lead and looked more than capable of hanging around the full 48 minutes. Look for the Suns to once again be lined in the 5-6 point range with the total in the low 220s. The Nuggets have proven to be an underdog with teeth having gone 5-3 SU and ATS the last eight times. On the flipside, the Suns have been money in the bank in the home chalk role having won all but one of the last 10 times while posting a 6-4 ATS record.
Denver Nuggets
Most of the regulars the team depends on to lead it to success rose to the occasion in the series opener. Jokic went for 22 and 9. Michael Porter Jr. 15 and 7. Aaron Gordon 18 and 4. Heck, even Facundo Campazzo got into the mix with 14 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds. The one player not mentioned however is Monte Morris who went MIA on Monday night. After coming up huge in Games 5 and 6 against Portland in which he combined for 50 points, 14 assists and 7 rebounds, the former Iowa State Cyclone only managed two points on a wretched 1 of 10 shooting. In order to get the best of the white hot Suns, Denver needs to get more production from its bench. Morris more times than not has been that guy. He must step up in Game 2!
Phoenix Suns
As efficient the Suns proved to be in the series opener, even the Brooklyn Nets would’ve had a hard time disposing of Monty Williams’s squad. Phoenix would go on to drain 54 percent of its shots from the field and knock down 17 of 20 from the charity stripe; they also got to the line 14 more times than the Nuggets. Devin Booker and Chris Paul tied for the team lead in scoring with 21 points apiece. The former also added 8 assists and 4 rebounds while the latter dished off 11 dimes and came four rebounds shy of logging the triple-double. DeAndre Ayton was also tremendous enforcing his will en route to tallying a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Most importantly he remained on the court for 36+ minutes by staying out of foul trouble (1).
Denver vs. Phoenix Prediction
If Game 1 told us anything, it’s that Denver really missed the services of Jamal Murray in attempting to run with the Suns. Both regular season tilts played in Phoenix went to overtime and resulted in wins and covers for the Nuggets. The lone Mile High City meeting saw Phoenix pull out the 106-103 outright win and cover as 3-point dogs. Murray went for 31, 18 and 26 points in the three matchups. His scoring prowess was severely missed Monday night. I fully expect Michael Malone to make adjustments and have his team in it with a chance to even the series in the rematch. Look for Jokic to make it a point to bring the action to Ayton and see if he can get the big man into foul trouble. When he did that earlier in the year, Denver left Talking Stick with the 120-112 win. Mind you, Booker missed that tilt. Regardless, Denver has earned an investment by proving to be resilient coming off recent losses. I’ll ride the trend and see if the wave takes me back to the betting window to cash a ticket.
