The way the Los Angeles Clippers went about their business minutes into Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, you’d think they were the ones looking to close the door on the Phoenix Suns. That however wasn’t the case. Monty Williams’s squad had just taken a 3-1 series lead in Tinseltown and looked to punch a ticket to the NBA Finals as decided 7-point favorites per the closing NBA playoff odds at online sportsbooks. Odds Analysis
Though Phoenix holds the 3-2 series lead, it’s Los Angeles that’s come in the money in three of the five played games. Monday night’s commanding outright triumph saw LA cover the closing number in each of the last two games played in the desert. LA split Games three and four back home cruising 106-92 to get back in the series, but then lost a tough one by an 84-80 final count as short 1-point favorites. Game 6 initially hit the board at a pick ‘em with the total lined at 215.5. After destroying the Suns with their backs against the wall, the Clippers immediately moved to -1. Game 5 saw the over cash for the second time in this series snapping a streak of three straight under hits. As the series goes deeper, the O/U’s continue to fall. Game 1 closed 220. Game 2, 221.5 and Game 3 went off the board at 221. The under cashed in the latter two forcing a move to 217.5 for Game 4; the under still hit. After Game 5 closed 213.5 and the over hit, the number to beat for Game 6 clocks in at 215.5. Both games played in this series at the Staples Center combined for an average of just 181 points per game.
Phoenix Suns
Save for Devin Booker (31) and Chris Paul (22), nobody else on the roster rose to the occasion on Monday night. It was flat-out ugly! Mikal Bridges only managed five points in just under 28 minutes. Jae Crowder went for four and only took six shots. Cameron Payne – Game 2’s hero – scored five points for the second straight game and still looks to be feeling the after effects of the ankle sprain incurred early in Game 3. Most bothersome was Deandre Ayton’s 10 points and 11 rebounds. Though game flow didn’t allow for the big man to get heavily involved, the offense didn’t take advantage of him when the game was actually close the few times it was in the second and third quarters. Coach Monty best scrap the plan of attack and look elsewhere for Game 6, or else this series is headed back to the desert.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers look to be growing right before our eyes. The team’s sensational playoff run was extended in Game 5 by way of every integral piece of the puzzle stepping up and doing their job. Paul George was simply unconscious going off for a postseason-career-best 41 points on 15 of 20 shooting. He also added 13 rebounds and six assists. But the story didn’t end there. Marcus Morris stepped up in the absence of Ivica Zubac by tallying 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Reggie Jackson was again lethal from deep draining four of seven shots to ultimately post 23 points. DeMarcus Cousins scored a playoff-high 15 points. It all amounted to LA destroying Phoenix in the paint 58-32! Rounding it all out was the defensive play of Patrick Beverley who was in CP3’s ear all game and was seen mocking him for flopping after a hard foul.
Phoenix vs. Los Angeles Prediction
Going into this series, I didn’t think the Clippers had it in them to outlast the Suns sans Kawhi Leonard. Now that five games are in the books, I’m not sure Phoenix has the closers on its roster to see this series all the way through. With that, the +420 return on the Clippers to win this series looks awfully attractive! If ever there was a team still remaining in the postseason that could battle back from a 3-1 deficit and win, it’s the 2020-21 Clippers. That just reads weird and is even stranger to type! Seriously though, LA has already gone into Dallas for Game 6 facing elimination and come out on top. It also rattled off four straight against a Jazz team that also didn’t have the closers to seal the deal. Paul George is a man playing amongst boys right now, and there’s no way I’m betting against him at the very least extending this series to a seventh and deciding game.
