A field of eight will head to the post on Saturday in the Belmont Stakes on NBC, with Essential Quality listed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite. Five of the eight horses in the field are listed at single-digit odds, so we have just three longshots to consider. Those three horses are Bourbonic at odds of 15-1, Overtook at odds of 20-1 and France Go de Ina at odds of 30-1. Let’s consider those three horses and see if they have any chance to win Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.
2021 Belmont Stakes Odds

2. Essential Quality, Brad Cox, Luis Saez, 2-1
3. Rombauer, Michael McCarthy, John Velazquez, 3-1
4. Hot Rod Charlie, Doug O’Neill, Flavien Prat, 7-2
5. France Go de Ina, Hideyuki Mori, Ricardo Santana Jr., 30-1
6. Known Agenda, Todd Pletcher, Irad Ortiz Jr., 6-1
7. Rock Your World, John Sadler, Joel Rosario, 9-2
8. Overtook, Todd Pletcher, Manny Franco, 20-1
Bourbonic (15-1)
Trainer Todd Pletcher has three horses in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes. Bourbonic was a huge surprise winner of the Wood Memorial but he did nothing in the Kentucky Derby, finishing 13th. There is not much to like about Bourbonic, as he is the son of Bernardini and that horse never won past a distance of a mile and a quarter. No horse has won the Wood and the Belmont since Empire Maker in 2003.
Pletcher is trying to tell everyone that his horse can make the distance. “The Wood was a big step forward. That was his first try at a mile and an eighth,” Pletcher said to the media, “Considering the way the Derby unfolded, there wasn't too much changing of position, I thought he ran well that day. Kendrick said he was hard to pull up after the wire, so hopefully that indicates a mile and a half will be within his wheelhouse.”
No. 8 Overtook (20-1)
Pletcher also has Overtook who will be ridden by Manny Franco. Overlook finished second in the Grade III Withers Stakes at Aqueduct and he finished third in the Grade III Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park. Overtook is the son of Curlin and he can’t be ignored. Keep in mind that seven of the past 20 Belmont winners have finished in the money without running in the Derby or the Preakness. It also helps that Franco won the Belmont Stakes last year aboard Tiz the Law.
France Go de Ina (30-1)
The longest shot in the field is France Go de Ina at odds of 30-1. Trainer Hideyuki Mori has yet to win a race in North America and it would be a major surprise if France Go de Ina is a contender. The horse has speed but there are huge questions about his stamina. The horse was sixth in the UAE Derby and then finished seventh in the Preakness. There is no reason to believe that the horse is going to step up and be a factor on Saturday.
Belmont Stakes Longshot Picks
Normally when we look at a race there are a number of longshots to consider but in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes we have just three. There is nothing to like about France Go de Ina so that leaves us with Bourbonic and Overtook. When it comes to the Belmont and the mile and a half distance you have to look at pedigree and there are huge concerns about the pedigree of Bourbonic, as the horse doesn’t figure to have the stamina to handle the mile and a half. The only longshot worth considering on Saturday is Overtook. We know that he should have the pedigree to handle the distance and he is coming off a good race at Belmont Park. I am not saying that Overtook is going to win, but he is at least worth considering on some of your Belmont Stakes exotic tickets.
