Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

One of the races which are still really trying to form an identity in the Breeders’ Cup is the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. This race has been held at several different distances over the years since its inception in 2008. This year, the race will once again be held at just five furlongs, the shortest in the history of the race.

This is the second race of the day at the Breeders' Cup on Saturday, November 2, and the action can be seen live on NBC Sports Network. Post-time is scheduled for 3:33 p.m. ET.

Stormy Liberal for trainer Peter Miller will try to make history by winning this race for the third straight year. Miller will also have Belvoir Bay and Om in this race as he tries to win the race for the third straight year. The problem for Miller is that all three of his horses are likely to go off at double-digit odds, including Stormy Liberal.

There doesn’t look to be any strong favorite for this race. There are three horses that figure to be listed with odds between 4-1 and 6-1. Eddie Haskell for trainer Mark Glatt finished second in the Eddie D Stakes.

Total Boss for trainer George Arnold has won four of his last five starts. Arnold has never won a Breeders’ Cup race, but this could be his best chance to end his drought.

Pure Sensation for trainer Christophe Clement is a front running horse that will try to go wire-to-wire. Clement is another trainer looking for his first Breeders’ Cup win.

Darkhorse contenders include Leinster for trainer George Arnold, Fairyland for trainer Aidan O’Brien and Imprimis for trainer Joseph Orseno.

Longshots are Belvoir Bay, Final Frontier, Om, So Perfect, Stubbins and Stormy Liberal.

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Qualifying

International horses are often bred for sprinting a lot more effectively than in the United States, so it shouldn't be all that surprising that five of the seven "Win and You're In" races for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint are held overseas. That's not to say that there aren't American horses who end up entering the field at the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. At least half the field is going to be made up of American sprinters who have won some of the top sprints leading into the Breeders' Cup, while exemptions are also made for colts or mares who have won this race before.

Part of the reason why there are only two repeat winners of the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint is due to the fact that the distance of this race keeps changing. It's never been run at the same distance more than three times in a row. Mizdirection won the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint both in 2012 and 2013 as a four-year old and a five-year old, while Stormy Liberal won the race in 2017 and 2018.

The only multiple-time winners of the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in any respect are jockeys Mike Smith and Joel Rosario and trainers Mike Puype and Peter Miller.

Three-year olds don't win this race very often. In fact, the first winner of the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint as a three-year old was Bobby's Kitten in 2014. No other colt, filly or mare has won this race as anything younger than a four-year old.

In 2016, history was made when Obviously became the oldest winner of any Breeders' Cup race, capturing the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint as an 8-year old racer.
