Olympic Games Betting Odds: A total of 550 rowers who have qualified for the Summer Olympics are going to be hoping to return to their home nations with medals around their necks this year. The 2016 rowing competitions in the Olympics will take place at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Rio de Janeiro with all of the action starting on Saturday, August 6 and running through Saturday, August 13.
The nuances of rowing are tremendous, as there are a slew of different varieties of the sport. Small boats known as sculls operate differently than coxless pairs or the biggest boats, the coxed eight. There are even events in rowing based on weight, as the lighter competitors battle each other while the rest of the field matches wits on the water in separate competitions.
Each nation is only allowed to send out one rower per event, a nuance which makes things quite interesting when you're talking about individual disciplines. However, it's quite literally all hands on deck for the eight-man and eight-woman races, ones which are amongst the most exciting in the entirety of the Olympics.
The Germans have always enjoyed the rowing facets of the Olympics. East Germany, in fact, still holds the record for the most gold medals ever in rowing at 33, and Germany is fourth with 21. If you added up the medals for East Germany and Germany, you'd have a whopping 96 medals. Throw in West Germany and the Unified Germany team from the 1950s and 1960s, and you've got another 23 to add to the mix.
The United States though, is the most accomplished nation in the world in rowing, amassing 87 total medals. With two gold medals in Rio, the Stars and Stripes will surpass East Germany for the most rowing gold medals in Olympic history.
