It hasn’t been easy to support the Houston Dynamo over the last several seasons. Houston has not finished higher than 9th in the Western Conference and 17th in the MLS table over the past five years, and they have finished 25th in the overall league standings for each of the last three seasons. Everyone is calling for the Houston Dynamo to be one of the worst teams in the Western Conference for the sixth straight season. Houston didn’t really improve this offseason, and the Dynamo lost one of their best playmakers in Fafa Picault. Veterans Memo Rodriguez and Tim Parker also left for other MLS clubs, so new manager Ben Olsen will have his work cut out for him.
Fans can at least take heart in knowing that the front office has spent money this offseason to try and improve the situation. The Dynamo brought in Artur to be their center midfielder for $350,000 of GAM, and they shelled out seven figures to acquire forward Amine Bassi from FC Metz. They spent even more money in April with the signing of 21-year-old forward Ibrahim Aliyu from Lokomotiv Zagreb in Croatia.

The Houston Dynamo had one of the best starts you can imagine for a team moving to a new city. Ownership moved the club from San Jose to Houston at the conclusion of the 2005 season in order to find a city willing to build a brand-new soccer-specific stadium. Houston welcomed the club with open arms and was immediately rewarded with the club winning back-to-back MLS Cups right after the move.
However, it wasn’t all roses for the club after the move to Houston. The original name for the Houston franchise was Houston 1836. This was supposed to be a nod to when the city was founded, but that was also the same year that Texas gained its independence from Mexico. Many Houstonians protested the name, and it was quickly decided that the team should be named the Dynamo instead.
In an interesting twist, the Dynamo have only finished on top of the table once during their 16 seasons in the league despite making it to the MLS Cup four times. Additionally, they have the rare distinction of making it to the MLS Cup as both a member of the Western Conference and a member of the Eastern Conference. All four of their MLS Cup Finals appearances occurred in the club’s first seven years.
