From Shinnecock Hills to Winged Foot to Bethpage, golf in New York needs no introduction. It's world-class. And to those legendary venues and rich golfing history, New York can now add a TGL team, the fourth to be announced ahead of the league's launch. New York Mets owner Steven Cohen has purchased the New York Golf Club through his Cohen Private Ventures firm.

The four TGL team ownership groups now boast a sports portfolio that includes teams from the NFL, MLB, NHL, Premier League, NASCAR, MLS, and NWSL. Cohen, who bought the Mets in 2020, is an avid philanthropist and entrepreneur. He is also the Chairman and CEO of Point72, a global multi-strategy asset management company.

New York Golf Club Players

Matt Fitzpatrick: has seven international wins and was the 2022 US Open winner. Perhaps the most prepared man in golf will likely be the most prepared player in the TGL. With some of the most creative holes in the sport in play, Fitzpatrick should be well-suited to attack, which will benefit not only him but also his team.

Fitzpatrick is a great all-around player. He has eliminated whatever gaps existed in his game early in his career with persistent work on speed and strength training over the past few years. He is meticulous with his preparation and should also offer high-level skills when it comes to the ever-changing green in SoFi Center.

Fitzpatrick has great team golf experience from three Ryder Cups and it will be interesting to see the team dynamic on NYGC with tons of talent in the mix. It may seem odd with a veteran like Fowler and a superstar like Schauffele, but Fitzpatrick might end up being the most vocal on strategy, thanks to his attention to detail.

For six consecutive years, Fitzpatrick has gained at least two strokes putting per tournament against the rest of the world—an insane, insane number. The GreenZone better watch out.

Rickie Fowler: has six PGA Tour wins, won THE PLAYERS Championship in 2015, and has five Ryder Cup appearances for the USA Team. After a great 2023, Fowler ended 2024 on a high note in the fall with three consecutive top 25s and plenty of reason for optimism going into January.

Fowler's all-around game means you can put him in any situation and believe he’ll succeed. Of Fowler’s five top 25s in 2024, 60% of them came in his last three starts, suggesting that he’s on the right track heading into TGL.

Xander Schauffele: won gold at the 2020 Olympic Games, the 2024 Open Championship, and the 2024 PGA Championship. Schauffele has taken a step that many stars never take, from a great player to a potential all-time great trajectory. And he did it by adding speed to a game that was already top 10 in the world.

Schauffele will be leaned on as someone with a reputation for big moments after his performance on the final nine holes of the 2024 PGA Championship and Open Championship. He has the skills and temperament to keep cool under pressure.

Cameron Young: has two Korn Ferry Tour wins and was the 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

TGL matches will take place over 15 holes and two sessions. Players will hit full-swing shots off grass, rough, or sand into a simulator screen. Short-game shots under 50 yards and putts will take place inside the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, on a rotating, adjustable green.

Enhanced simulator golf matches will last roughly two hours and will take place primarily in primetime on Monday or Tuesday nights from January through March. There will be 15 regular-season matches, a four-team playoff, and a best-of-three final that will crown the first TGL champion.

Matches will be played over 15 holes and split up into two playing formats. The first session will see teams work together in an alternate shot-style format before transitioning to singles matches for the second session. The team with the most points at the end of the match will win. Similar to hockey, TGL match wins are worth two points, overtime losses are worth one point, and regulation losses are worth zero points.
