A win at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic may not have you “Standing in the Hall of Fame,” but it would certainly put a good chunk of change in your back pocket.
Rory McIlroy, who is sponsored by Omega and the focal point in the aforementioned commercial, could certainly add to his legacy and financial windfall with another victory. He’s the betting favorite for the tournament at +225 after winning at the Emirates Golf Club last year and in 2009.
McIlroy will be in good company during the first two rounds. Henrik Stenson, the man with the second-lowest odds (after the FIELD) at +1127, and Louis Oosthuizen ( +2877) will flank the second-ranked player in the world. There are plenty of household names in the field other than the star threesome mentioned above. Major winners Martin Kaymer and Graham McDowell are teeing it up in Dubai, although G-Mac hasn’t been in good form for quite some time.
Ernie Els, who has been the brunt of some putting jokes recently, is also in the field. Els had come down with a case of the putting yips, and on more than one occasion almost completely whiffed on short putts two feet and in.
It’s no wonder the oddsmakers decided to leave him off the list to win and shove him in the “FIELD.” But Els says he is feeling more confident on the greens now.
"I'm starting to feel more comfortable. I've got to put a couple more things together in my game, but the things I'm working on on the greens are starting to come around a little bit, which is so pleasing for me,” Els said. “For a while I had the heebiejeebies. I've had some bad years but last year was probably the worst. It was all on the greens and it was really getting into my head.”
Miguel Angel Jimenez is another tour vet that doesn’t show up on the odds sheet. He’s getting long in the tooth (52 years young), but he’s a man on a mission this year. The Mechanic is bypassing most of the PGA’s Senior Tour to play predominately European Tour events in 2016. The goal: Earn a spot on his country’s Olympic team.
If you’re in search of a value pick this week look no further than youngster Matthew Fitzpatrick. The 21-year-old won the British Masters back in October and has finished in the top 10 in the past five tournaments. Fitzpatrick currently has odds of +3653 to win this week.
