That’s not an opinion, it’s fact. Just check out this week’s Official World Golf Ranking.
But I would argue that even last week, or the week before, or the month before, Spieth was the best player on the planet. While Rory McIlroy held the No. 1 position in the world ranking, Spieth has been playing better golf all year.
He won the Hero World Challenge and Australian Open to finish off 2014, he took the Valspar Championship in March, then the Masters in April, the U.S. Open in June and for shits and giggles grabbed the John Deere Classic in early July. Oh yea, Spieth also finished second in four other tournaments, including this past week’s PGA Championship, and fourth at the Open Championship.
Not a bad year at all. The 22-year-old has collected more than $10 million for his efforts, and really should be the unanimous Male Athlete of the Year at next year’s ESPYs.
And you can’t help but love the kid. He’s not a stuckup prick like Tiger was at this age, he’s a down-to-earth, blue collar Christian cowboy. He has a mentally-challenged sister that keeps him grounded to reality.
Spieth is mature beyond his years, and it shows on the golf course. One hole he can be visibly frustrated, as he often wears his emotions on his sleeve, but the next he’ll be as calm as a Hindu cow. To deliver under pressure on this kind of stage, Spieth has to be in the right mindset week in and week out.
After winning the first two major of the season, much fanfare was made of Spieth capturing the Grand Slam. Heck, even BookMaker Sportsbook, which is littered with great golf odds and props these days, put up futures on whether or not Spieth would win the Slam. The odds were long and “YES” probably didn’t get much action, but I don’t think anyone thought he would come so close.
It won’t be the last time he’s in contention. Remember that you heard it here first: Jordan Spieth will complete the golf Grand Slam in the next 10 years. So when you see the Grand Slam odds up at BookMaker, throw some coin at them because it’s going to happen at some point soon.
