Tiger Woods is a desperate man these days.
He can’t win a tournament, he doesn’t have a girlfriend and he’s on the outside looking in to the playoff race that culminates the 2014-15 PGA season -- a race that sees $10 million go to the winner.
Tiger doesn’t need the money, what he needs is confidence. That’s why he’s decided to play in the Wyndam Championship at Greensboro, North Carolina, which begins Thursday.
Woods is currently ranked 187th in the world. Yup, you read that right…187 on a motha fuckin’ cop. To vault himself into the top 125, which would qualify him for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, he would need to win this week or finish alone in second place. There’s a better chance of Bradley Nowell rising from the dead.
Many moons ago, as the PGA season was just getting underway, I penned a column titled, “The Tiger is Slain.” In it, I made a brash statement, claiming that Tiger Woods would never win another tournament during his PGA career.
Many mocked and many criticized. But now, those masses are mute because they know that I was right. Tiger Woods is finished as an elite professional golfer.
The elite players are youngsters like Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day, unintimidated by their fellow competitors. Tiger used to hold a mental edge over everyone he teed up with, but that edge is gone.
BookMaker Sportsbook offered a few Tiger Woods’ prop odds before he competed in his first event of the season. One begged the question, “Will Tiger Woods win a tournament in 2015?” The option of “NO” opened at +525 and closed at +225.
Now, I’d like to say I was behind much of that movement, but my small betting beans didn’t shake the odds too much I’m sure. The sharp bettors, however, the guys who recognize that Tiger is done, likely threw a small pot of gold at him not winning in 2015.
I have one request to the media before I sign off. I kindly ask that the Golf Channel, NBC, CBS, FOX, ESPN, TBS and whatever other network is televising golf these days, quit showing Woods a million times per broadcast.
You don’t show any other player that is 4-over par that many times. I realize that Tiger is one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game, and I can appreciate that, but there are more deserving golfers that need the coverage to appease their sponsors. Tiger has bookoos of money, some of these other guys are just trying to survive on Tour.
So please, I beg of you, get your token Tiger coverage in early, maybe once or twice, and then quit showing him. If he’s in contention, then I won’t argue, but that’s not going to happen any time soon, or possibly ever again.
