2018-19 Clemson Tigers Betting
Clemson is looking to build off of one of its most successful seasons in school history. The Tigers made it to the Sweet Sixteen for the third time ever last year, but Brad Brownell knows the challenge that awaits in the notoriously difficult ACC. It was only the second time he had taken the program to the NCAA Tournament in his eight years on campus, and the goal is to keep that momentum going this year.

Tigers National Championship Odds: +9000
The Tigers have largely been one of the ACC’s doormats over the conference’s history, with only sporadic periods of success. Clemson was one of the few schools that prioritized football over basketball in the conference over its first four decades, and it was apparent from its results on the court.
Clemson has made just 12 trips to the NCAA Tournament, and the program has only one ACC regular season conference championship to its name. That came in 1990 when Cliff Ellis coached the Tigers to a 10-4 conference record and an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen with stars like Dale Davis and Elden Campbell leading the way. Ellis is still the program’s winningest coach with 177 wins during his tenure, and he was also the only Clemson coach to be named ACC Coach of the Year.
Recently, Clemson has become more competitive in basketball and coaches Oliver Purnell and Brad Brownell have had the Tigers flirting with NCAA Tournament appearances over the last 15 years. During this time, the school has made it to the tournament five times and they have posted a .500 or better record in conference play nine times in the last 12 seasons.

It looked like Clemson’s hopes of making it to the NCAA Tournament last season were dashed when Donte Grantham suffered a season-ending injury in mid-January. Up until that point, Grantham had been the star of the team, and he had been shooting the lights out from the field. Instead of collapsing though, Clemson circled the wagons and the Tigers might have one of their best seasons ever this year. Grantham and Gabe DeVoe are gone, but three other starters are back and that has fans optimistic.
Guards Shelton Mitchell and Marcquise Reed both considered jumping to the NBA after successful junior seasons, but both players decided to return to campus after getting unfavorable draft grades. That’s a huge boost for Clemson in their bid to return to the NCAA Tournament this season.
Both Mitchell and Reed are decent shooters, but where they make their mark is as distributors and defenders. Mitchell led the team in assists, while Reed led the conference in steals, and they will average big minutes for this team this season.
In the front court, senior Elijah Thomas is the go-to guy. He shook off the foul troubles that plagued him earlier in his career last season, and that led to him averaging 10.7 PPG and 8.1 RPG as a junior. Thomas is one of the best interior defenders in the conference, and his 2.3 BPG show that teams can’t get a lot of easy baskets inside on Clemson. He could average a double-double as a senior this season, and he is a contender for all-conference honors.
