LSU Tigers NCAA Basketball Betting
There is no longer any doubt that the LSU Tigers will make it to the NCAA Tournament. LSU ran out to a big lead against Missouri in the second round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday, locking up a spot in March Madness. Will Wade will have led this program to three straight NCAA Tournament bids in a few days, but there is a dark cloud hanging over the program. The NCAA sent a notice of allegations to LSU for potential violations, and Wade continues to find himself in hot water.
2021-22 LSU Tigers at a Glance
National Championship Odds: +7500
LSU won its first 12 games to start the season. The Tigers didn’t play any strong opponents, but they did wipe the floor with solid teams like Belmont and Wake Forest. They also picked up a win over Penn State, but they fell to TCU at the end of January to lose their unbeaten record in non-conference games.
The Tigers only went 9-9 in SEC play, but they were able to pick up some quality wins. They lost their conference opener to Auburn, but they rallied to knock off Kentucky and Tennessee in Baton Rouge in the span of five days. LSU also went on the road to beat Florida and swept Texas A&M to secure nice wins over bubble teams. An overtime win over Alabama in their season finale likely clinched a berth in March Madness, but the win over Missouri in the SEC Tournament erased all doubt.
This defense ranks fifth in defensive efficiency per Ken Pomeroy. LSU does a great job forcing turnovers, as Will Wade comes from the Shaka Smart school of coaching that emphasizes pressure defense. They have the third-highest turnover rate in the nation and rank 12th in effective field goal percentage, and additionally the Bayou Bengals rank fourth in defending the three-point line. Opposing teams are making just 28% of their three-pointers against LSU.
Offensively, LSU ranks 87th in efficiency and 187th in effective field goal percentage. The Tigers do a great job on the offensive glass, but they turn the ball over quite a bit and struggle to hit threes themselves. This team is making just 32.2% of its triples as a whole on the year.
The best player on LSU is sophomore forward Tari Eason. Some NBA pundits are projecting Eason to be a lottery pick in this summer’s draft, and he has shown his versatility with the Tigers. Eason is averaging 16.9 PPG and 6.9 RPG, and he is making 51.9% of his field goals and 37.1% of his threes. Turnovers were a problem against Missouri, but he can score in bunches and take over for stretches of games.
Darius Days is the second leading scorer on the team. Days is averaging 13.6 PPG and 7.7 RPG for the Tigers. Interestingly, Eason and Days are the two best perimeter shooters on LSU despite being forwards, as none of the other players averaging at least 4.0 PPG are making at least 35% of their threes.
Two of LSU’s three guards are making just a quarter of their threes. Xavier Pinson and Eric Gaines have both struggled from beyond the arc. Brandon Murray has been a little better, but he hasn’t been a great free throw shooter, so there could be some problems with perimeter shooting for LSU during March Madness.
The No. 5 seed LSU Tigers will face the No. 4 seed Arkansas Razorbacks in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament on Friday, March 11. LSU lost both of its games to Arkansas earlier this year, but the Tigers only lost to the Razorbacks by a single point last week. The winner will likely face Auburn with a spot in the SEC Championship Game on the line.
