Miguel Roman’s ninth-round KO retires Daniel Ponce de Leon
Streaking Miguel Roman stopped two-division titlewinner Daniel Ponce de Leon in the ninth round of Saturday's junior lightweight bout at Ciudad Cuauhtémoc in Chihuahua, Mexico, after which the 33-year-old Ponce de Leon announced his retirement from boxing.
The knockout was the sixth straight during a run of eight consecutive victories for the 28-year-old Roman (46-11, 35 KOs), who has stopped seven fighters total during that time. Roman had last suffered defeat by unanimous decision to Dante Jordan in October 2012.
Boxing Betting Lines: Former world champion Daniel Ponce de Leon (45-6, 35 KOs) will face Miguel Roman (45-11, 34 KOs) for the WBC International super featherweight title on June 7, 2014 at the Estadio de Beisbol Cuahtemoc in Chihuahua, Mexico. There's more at stake than just a title for Daniel Ponce De Leon: he's put his famed ponytail on the line as well against Miguel "Mickey" Roman. Ponce De Leon is coming off a wild second round TKO loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in March. Roman is riding a seven fight win streak, most recently beating Enrique Tinoco in February. Expect former champion Ponce De Leon to be the favorite in the Bookmaker sportsbook.
While both fighters are known for their power, Roman has never been stopped in his career. However, he'll be facing the stiffest competition of his career in a former champion who is used to boxing against some of the best in the world at featherweight. Roman knows that this fight could mark a huge step up in his career:
"Never before have I been so motivated before a fight. I'm going to the home of former world champion and getting a win can put me one step closer to a world title or to an elimination fight. I'm not going to miss this opportunity that I've been presented in my career. These opportunities only come around once, so I thank my promoter for placing their trust in me, getting me a fight that I had long been looking for and finally providing me with it. I will not fail, I promise."
If you're betting on this fight at Bookmaker, Roman makes an intriguing play against a bigger name. The 28-year old WBC International silver lightweight champion is riding a streak of KOs, including a stunning TKO of former champion Juan Carlos Salgado last November. De Leon has been stopped in his last two fights and has openly pondering retirement. This could be his swan song.
