Cain Velasquez is 13-1 with 11 knockouts and two decision wins in his professional career. He was supposed to face off against Werdum for the heavyweight title on November 15th, 2014, but a torn meniscus in training forced him to withdraw. Werdum went on to face Mark Hunt on that date and emerged victorious to set up this showdown. Velasquez is healthy again and will be fighting for the first time since beating Junior Dos Santos by fifth-round knockout on October 19th, 2013, to retain his heavyweight belt. Dos Santos is the only fighter to ever beat Velasquez, doing so by first-round knockout on November 12th, 2011. Velasquez has won four straight fights since that loss, including two victories over Dos Santos to prove the first loss wouldn’t derail his championship hopes. Dos Santos originally took the heavyweight title from Velasquez, but Velasquez won it back on December 29th, 2012 in the rematch.
Fabricio Werdum has a career mark of 19-5-1 with nine wins by submission, six by knockout and four by decision. Werdum has won five consecutive bouts entering this matchup, including the victory over Hunt to claim the interim UFC title. He would love to pick up the belt permanently with a victory over Velasquez, but he will be the underdog to pull off the upset.
There will be 12 fights in total on the main card. Some of the other top matchups include Gilbert Melendez against Eddie Alvarez in a lightweight fight; Kelvin Gastelum versus Nate Marquardt in middleweight action and Yair Rodriguez facing off against Charles Rosa. The other fights are intriguing but the big one is definitely Velasquez against Werdum. Velasquez will aim to prove he is still the rightful heavyweight champion in this first fight back from injury in UFC gambling.
