Jose Aldo Recent Form

Aldo has to get back on the horse in a hurry if he wants to reclaim the UFC featherweight title. He held the belt until he was beaten by Conor McGregor in December, and the only reason this fight is for the belt is because McGregor has vacated the title.

The big problem here for Aldo is to get over losing a bout in 13 seconds via one punch from McGregor. Champions don't go down that easily in any medium of fighting, and Aldo is going to have to get over that in a hurry just seven months after finding himself with his mat on the back in just 13 ticks.

Prior to that though, it's not like Aldo wasn't a great fighter. He took care of Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas by unanimous decision.

Frankie Edgar Recent Form

Edgar has been on a tear over the course of the last few years. He really started to head in the right direction when he went from the lightweight division to the featherweight division. He took care of Charles Oliveria at UFC 162 in 2013 and took care of B.J. Penn for the third time in his career in his next fight a year later. Cub Swanson and Urijah Faber both went by the wayside as well, and taking care of Mendes moved him up to the No. 3 spot in the featherweight division.

Edgar though, hasn't had to fight against the elite level fighters in quite some time. Back in 2013, he was beaten by Aldo for the featherweight title, and prior to that, he was taken care of twice by Benson Henderson for the lightweight title.

Edgar hasn't held a belt since 2011, so this is a massive spot in his career at the age of 34, and that might be his last shot to get to the top of the mountain.

Keys to the Fight

The key in this fight is going to be whether we see the power game on display for Edgar. Sure, Edgar only has six knockouts in his career, but he's got a real power game behind him, and we know that Aldo has to be thinking about that 13-second fight he just had against McGregor in which he lasted a total of one punch before getting knocked out.

Aldo has to keep this fight quite tactical. The longer this fight goes, the better shape he's theoretically going to be in. Neither of these fighters are much for submissions, so we know if we're going to see a comprehensive victory, it's going to come either from a fantastically placed kick or punch.

Still, this fight features opening MMA odds at a pick 'em, but the fact that this fight has a total the maximum 4.5 rounds suggests Aldo is going to end up getting back to his winning ways.

The vacant featherweight championship belt will be handed out to either Jose Aldo or Frankie Edgar in UFC 200 on Saturday, July 9, 2016 in Las Vegas.
