Weekly Matchup
The Arizona State Sun Devils are a touchdown underdog per the college football betting odds three weeks before their game against the Wisconsin Badgers. Arizona State was ranked for much of the season, but the Sun Devils struggled down the stretch with a 3-3 record in their final six games after a 5-1 start.
Jayden Daniels failed to throw for more than 170 yards in any of Arizona State’s four games in November. He seemed to regress as a passer as the season went on, and he finished the year with just one more touchdown than interception.
Arizona State runs the ball pretty well. The Sun Devils ran for over 200 YPG this season and averaged 5.3 YPC. Rachaad White is the leading running back with 1,006 yards (5.5 YPC) and 15 touchdowns, and Daniels isn’t far behind with 670 yards and six touchdowns.
It’s not easy to run on Wisconsin though. The Badgers have the best run defense in the nation, allowing just 2.2 YPC and 65.8 YPG on the ground. They rank first in total defense (241.4 YPG), and they are second nationally in third down defense. Leo Chenal and Nick Herbig have been great linebackers with 14 sacks between them.
Graham Mertz has not developed as Wisconsin was hoping he would at quarterback. Mertz was the program’s highest-rated quarterback recruit, but he had a down sophomore season. He completed just 58.7% of his passes for 6.8 YPA with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions despite having a great offensive line and a very good ground game.
Wisconsin has a 1,000-yard running back of its own in Braelon Allen. The Badgers’ leading rusher has accumulated 1,109 yards and 12 touchdowns, and he is averaging 7.1 YPC.
Allen was running wild before the season finale against Minnesota, as Chez Mellusi suffered a season-ending injury last month.
Previous Game Recap
Arizona State had little trouble beating Arizona to win the Territorial Cup. The Sun Devils had just 314 total yards of offense, but they made the most of their possessions and got 16 points from their defense. Tyler Johnson recovered a Will Plummer fumble on the one-yard line to set up a touchdown plunge from Rachaad White on the next play. A botched punt led to a safety for the Sun Devils late in the third quarter, and then Jack Jones returned an interception 87 yards for a touchdown to ice the win for the Sun Devils.
Jayden Daniels didn’t have to do much in the win for Arizona State. Daniels completed 10 of 14 passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 86 yards and a touchdown, showcasing his mobility.
Rachaad White led the Sun Devils with 21 carries for 98 yards and a score. He also had three receptions for 31 yards in the win. Ricky Pearsall was once again the leading receiver with five catches for 52 yards and both receiving TDs.
The Wildcats were unable to have any real success in the run game. Arizona ended the day with 34 carries for 50 yards, as Will Plummer was under duress for much of the day.
Plummer did complete 28 of 38 passes for 346 yards with a touchdown and an interception though. Stanley Berryhill III was the top receiver with 10 catches for 104 yards.

On September 18, the Sun Devils have a potentially dangerous non-conference game at the BYU Cougars. The Pac-12 Conference road opener at the UCLA Bruins on October 2 could be challenging as well. October 16 brings another rough road game at the perennial Pac-12 title contender Utah Utes.
One of the biggest games of the year for the Sun Devils is on November 6, when they host the USC Trojans in a game that could decide the Pac-12 South Division title.
November 13 is a potential letdown spot at the Washington Huskies, who are in the conversation for the Pac-12 North Division championship.
The regular season finale is at home against the Arizona Wildcats for the Territorial Cup on November 27.
