NCAA Football Betting Online: The move to the Big Ten Conference hasn’t been as gratifying as the Maryland Terrapins were hoping when the transition was made four years ago. But there was a big leap for the program in 2016. Under rookie coach D.J. Durkin, the Terps doubled their win total, going from three victories at the close of the Randy Edsall era to six wins last season. Now it’s time for the Terps to take the next step, but breaking through in the competitive Big Ten East will be a tall task.
2017 Maryland Terrapins at a Glance
Terrapins National Championship Odds: +20000
Terrapins Odds To Win Big Ten: +12500
Terrapins Regular Season Win Total: 5.5
A good sign for the Terps last season was that they beat up on teams they were supposed to. The bad sign is that they proved how wide the gap remains between them and the powerhouse programs in the East. Maryland was smoked by Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State, losing by a combined score of 159-20.
The difference should be smaller in 2017 as Durkin has more of his recruits on the field. But the glaring issue last season, and the season before that, was the inconsistent quarterback play. The passing attack produced just 178 yards per game last season and Durkin needs to find a replacement for Perry Hills. North Carolina transfer Caleb Henderson will get a look, as will Max Bortenschlager, who saw limited action last season as a freshman.
The Terps will lean on the run game and it should help ease the new QB into his role. They ran for nearly 200 yards a game in 2016 with Ty Johnson averaging 9.1 yards per pop and amassing 1,004 yards on just 110 carries. Lorenzo Harrison was equally dangerous averaging 7.2 yards a carry. The two combined for 11 touchdowns and will operate behind a line that returns three starters.
The defense got worked over by the big boys last year but plenty of experience returns from those beatings. Six full-time starters are back and as many as 10 players who saw significant snaps return. That doesn’t mean anything unless the group shows improvement heading into 2017. The front will be disruptive with 30 sacks returning, but a secondary that had just one interception over the final eight regular season games needs to come up with a big play.

An original member of the Atlantic Coast Conference when that league was formed in 1952, Maryland enjoyed success in the relatively young league. The Terps won nine ACC titles and a national championship in 1953 with a 10-1 record. Two years earlier, Maryland finished the season at 10-0 but was ranked third in the AP poll. The Associated Press released its final poll prior to bowl season so the outcomes didn’t affect the rankings. It hurt the Terps in 1951, but benefitted them in 1953 as they would go on to lose the Orange Bowl that year.
Following their Orange Bowl loss at the end of the 1955 season, the program went into a funk, producing just three winning seasons in the next 17. The team returned to the AP rankings and a bowl game in 1973 under Jerry Claiborne. Between 1973 and 1985, the Terps would win at least eight games 11 times and play in a bowl game in each of those years.
The team would emerge from a slump with the hiring of Ralph Friedgen in 2001. The Terps strung together three seasons of at least 10 victories for the first time in program history, including a record 11 wins in 2002. UM couldn’t match that run of success and Friedgen was let go following the 2010 season due to what the school called a lack of fan support. UM was 9-4 that year with a Military Bowl victory. It was the last bowl win for the program. After 62 years, Maryland left the ACC for the Big Ten Conference in 2014.
