NCAA Football Betting Online: It was quite the turnaround for the Miami RedHawks in 2016 and now they’re looking to ride the momentum of a second half surge to become a player in the MAC East. The RedHawks began last season with six straight losses, including a pivotal loss to Ohio. Following a defeat to Akron, the RedHawks rattled off six straight victories, earning their first bowl invitation in six years. Miami battled Mississippi State, but came up short in the St. Petersburg Bowl, leaving the RedHawks with their sixth straight losing campaign.

The common thread between both halves of last season was quarterback Gus Ragland, who took over behind center after the club started 0-6. The offense was sour with Billy Bahl taking a majority of snaps early in the year. Miami averaged just 17 points per game and after the horrible start, Chuck Martin turned to Ragland, who spent the first part of the season recovering from an injury.
Ragland had an immediate effect on the offense. The RedHawks started scoring and winning. Under Ragland Miami’s points per game nearly doubled and he was effective, throwing for 1,537 yards and 17 touchdowns. He took care of the football as well, with just one interception among his 179 pass attempts. The question now is can he continue? The schedule eased up in the second half and there was no pressure on him with the team suffering.
With eight starters back on offense, there is hope the unit can continue to perform at the level it did with Ragland running the show. The ground game needs to be better than the 107th ranked group last season and the return of Alonzo Smith should help rectify that area. Smith ran for 709 yards in 2016 and the best rushing games of the season came in the final six.
A solid receiving corps is also back to help Ragland and the RedHawks should again boast one of the MAC’s top defenses. Miami led the MAC last season in total defense and returns eight starters, including Heath Harding and Deondre Daniels, who make up what could be the top cornerback duo in the conference. The RedHawks are primed for a return to the top of the division standings and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them play for a MAC title.

Miami was a dynasty in the early years of the MAC, winning eight conference titles between joining the league in 1948 and 1965. The RedHawks won four championships in a five-year span posting a 36-8-1 record in those five seasons. Miami first appeared in a bowl game the season before joining the MAC, beating Texas Tech in the Sun Bowl. The RedHawks defeated Arizona State in the Salad Bowl following the 1950 season, winning the first two bowl games in school history.
The team would continue winning with 24 consecutive non-losing campaigns since joining the MAC. But the breakthrough season would take place in 1973. Miami went 11-0 that year winning the Tangerine Bowl and entered the AP poll for the first time with a ranking of No. 15. The RedHawks would go 32-1-1 over three seasons with three Tangerine Bowl wins and a top-15 ranking in the final AP poll.
The program would enjoy mid-major success throughout the next three decades until a guy by the name of Ben Roethlisberger hit the campus in 2001. In his third season, Big Ben led the RedHawks to a 13-1 record, a GMAC Bowl win and a No. 10 ranking in the final AP poll. Miami wouldn’t experience that kind of success since, though it did win 10 games in 2010, the last time the RedHawks won the MAC championship.
