NCAA Football Betting Online: The New Mexico State Aggies are determined to keep playing football at the FBS level. Although the Sun Belt informed both New Mexico State and Idaho that their services will no longer be needed last year, the Aggies have made no plans to drop down a level. The school is already putting together a schedule as an FBS Independent in 2018 and is hopeful that it can find another conference eventually. If the school could reach its first bowl game in 57 seasons, that would help matters significantly.

The Aggies weren’t terrible last season, which is better than you can say for much of the school’s history. New Mexico State went 3-9 and even scored a huge win against arch-rival New Mexico, the first time it has beat the Lobos in five years.
Tyler Rogers was one of the reasons for the school’s relative success. Rogers is a gunslinger who isn’t afraid to throw the ball around and is a successful runner too. Although Aggies quarterbacks were sacked 36 times in 2016, he still managed to rush for 333 yards and four touchdowns. He is a fifth-year senior and one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the conference.
Rogers loses his best big play threat in Tyrian Taylor, but virtually all of the team’s other receivers return. O.J. Clark will see a lot more passes this year. He led the team with 43 receptions as a freshman and runs a ton of underneath routes. Rogers likes to check down to him often.
The hopes and dreams of the offense rest on Larry Rose. Rose had a banner 2015 campaign for the Aggies, running for over 1,600 yards while averaging 6.9 yards per carry and picking up third-team All-American honors as a result. He spent the early part of last year recovering from a hernia and only got going near the end of the year. Rose should have a big 2017 campaign.
Defense has been the issue for the Aggies for quite some time. The school has allowed at least 37 points per game in every season this decade. However, there is finally some reason for optimism. Nine starters return from last year and there are a lot of senior leaders and graduate transfers from power conference schools looking to make an impact.

Only two coaches have ever had success in Las Cruces, Warren Woodson and Gerald Hines. Hines was the coach from 1931 to 1939 and compiled a record of 46-31-7 during his time on campus. He was the first coach in school history and took the Aggies to their first bowl game just five seasons into the job.
Woodson is easily the best coach New Mexico State has ever had. He led the Aggies to their only undefeated season and won back-to-back Sun Bowls in 1959 and 1960. Woodson only had three losing seasons in his 10 years at the school and has the best winning percentage in school history.
Aside from those two spurts, the Aggies have been abysmal. New Mexico State is 195-497-4 over the 65 seasons where neither Woodson or Hines was the coach.
Doug Martin is in his fifth season on the job and hasn’t had much luck so far. He is 10-38, but there have been signs of life under his watch. This team has a ton of upperclassmen and this should be easily his best team yet. There’s a chance the Aggies could make a bowl if things break out right, but playing five of their first seven on the road will be tough.
