NCAA Football Betting Online: The Ohio Bobcats have been consistently good over the last decade, but they haven’t been able to get the big win. They Bobcats won eight games in 2016, their second straight 8-win season and the seventh time they’ve won at least that many in the past 11 years. There have also been eight bowl game appearances, but the Bobcats are still in the hunt for that elusive MAC title, which they haven’t captured since 1968. A few division championships were nice, but it’s time for Frank Solich to get his group over the hump.
2017 Ohio Bobcats at a Glance
Bobcats National Championship Odds: +50000
Bobcats Regular Season Win Total: 7.5
Ohio won the MAC East last year and should be in the hunt for a division title again in 2017. They have churned out a winner nearly every year of the Solich regime, but the conference championship has been elusive. The Bobcats haven’t had a losing season in the last eight under Solich and they’ve reached a bowl game seven times. The pieces are in place for another strong season, but getting that MAC title would be the capper.
The offense rarely breaks out and last year was no different. The Bobcats ranked 85th nationally in scoring with 26.3 points per game and were 77th in total offense at 392.4 yards per contest. They’ve gotten by in the past with mediocre production and they did last season, but more consistent play, especially from the quarterback spot, is needed.
Quinton Maxwell started seven games down the stretch as a freshman and gained valuable experience. He’ll open as the likely starter, but if his inconsistent play persists, we could get a look at junior college transfer Nathan Rourke. The key is to be efficient and let the defense do what it does best. The ground game will carry the Bobcats. Dorian Brown is back after rushing for 825 yards last season and the return of A.J. Ouellette, who ran for nearly 1,500 yards his first two years, is expected back after injury limited him in 2016.
The Bobcats have played for the MAC title four times since 2006 and have come up empty each time. They have the benefit of playing in the weaker East Division and they have an opportunity to reach the championship game for a second straight season with what should be a favorable schedule. There is no Western Michigan or Northern Illinois in cross-over games, and the foundation built by Solich and his staff has the Bobcats primed for a return to the title game.

Ohio joined the MAC as a charter member for the 1947 season and is the only school from the original five members that still resides in the conference. The Bobcats enjoyed success prior to joining the MAC under the leadership of Don Peden, who led the team to a 49-9-3 record in a seven-year span in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The school would later rename its home stadium in honor of the program’s winningest coach.
Ohio was crowned National Small College champions in 1960 following a perfect 10-0 season. Two years later, playing at the major college level, the Bobcats would compete in their first bowl game, losing the Sun Bowl to cap an 8-3 year. The 1968 club went undefeated through the regular season to post a major college school record 10 wins and was nationally ranked for the first time. The season ended with a Tangerine Bowl loss to Richmond.
The program suffered through countless losing campaigns until Solich took over in 2006. In his second season the Bobcats won nine games, their most since 1968 and reached its first bowl since the same year. After a successful stint at Nebraska, Solich brought stability to the program. The Bobcats finished at or above .500 10 times in his 12 years and played in five consecutive bowl games from 2009 to 2013, getting the first bowl win in school history in 2011. The Bobcats haven’t won a MAC title since 1968, but they have played in the league’s championship game four times in the past 11 seasons.
