NCAA Football Rice Owls Betting OddsNCAA Football Betting Online: The Rice Owls were one of the worst teams in college football a season ago, and now have to replace their quarterback. The Owls weren’t very good on either side of the ball in 2016 and are hoping to find at least modest improvement.

The expectations are low, with their win total only slightly higher than the three victories they totaled last year. Rice needs an infusion of talent or a quarterback to step in and excel or else another season struggling to remain competitive could be in the cards.

Rice averaged only 25.2 points per game a season ago, which was among the worst totals in the country. Quarterback Tyler Stehling finished last season with 2,046 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. While he wasn’t great, the Owls will now need to find a replacement. The player expected to take over is sophomore Jackson Tyner and he will aim to improve the explosiveness of the unit.

Rice will look to regularly establish the run in 2017, as it returns Samuel Stewart and Austin Walter to the backfield. Stewart had 76 carries for 479 yards and three touchdowns on the ground last season while Walter added 68 carries for 343 yards and four scores.

The defense allowed 37.3 points per game a year ago, which was 14th-worst in the country. The Owls were bad both against the run and the pass and hope a switch to a 4-3 defense will help the unit improve.

Linebacker Emmanuel Ellerbee is the top returner, as he had 118 tackles and 3.5 sacks a season ago. He should be good again, but needs some help from others.

Rice is not very far removed from a stretch of three consecutive bowl berths, including a 10-win season in 2013. However, the Owls have been trending in the wrong direction since then, winning 8, 5 and 3 games the past three seasons.

The expectations aren’t much higher this season but coach David Bailiff hopes he can get something rolling. The non-conference slate is challenging, so Rice will really have to make some hay in conference play in order to surpass the projected win total of 3.5 games in 2017.
