NCAA Football Betting Online: Ron Carragher was fired after four middling seasons as head coach of the San Jose Spartans. Rather than go with a more established name to lead the program back to success, the Spartans decided to bring back one of the chief recruiters that helped set up the magical 2012 season. Brent Brennan has spent the last six seasons coaching receivers in Corvallis with Oregon State, but has an even bigger rebuilding job here. This will take some time and might get worse before it gets better.
Quarterback Kenny Potter graduated and leaves a gigantic hole in his wake. Sophomore Josh Love is the presumptive starter but was awful in limited action last season. He completed just 51.7 percent of his passes and threw for two touchdowns and five interceptions. Don’t be surprised if Brennan doesn’t pick Love and instead picks a fresh face.
Other than that, most of the skill position players are back. Last year’s leading receiver is gone, but the next two, Justin Holmes and Tre Hartley, will be starters in 2017. That will give whoever ends up starting some peace of mind.
The strength of the offense should be along the offensive line. San Jose State returns all five big boys along the line and four of those players will be seniors this year. That consistency along the line should mean they are less prone to penalties than other teams.
Defensively, San Jose State was pretty bad last season. The run defense was gashed to the tune of 5.48 yards a carry, but should be better with four returning starters among the front seven. The linebacking corps needs to beef up though.
San Jose State will be kicking off its season one week before most other teams. The Spartans will host South Florida on August 26 and then play seven weeks straight after that before they get a bye. The road slate is daunting with trips to Texas, Utah, Hawaii, and BYU and will make it hard for this team to be bowl eligible.

Outside of the 1980s and early 1990s, this program has struggled to have success. San Jose State was able to put up winning records as an independent and as a member of the PCAA but wasn’t able to receive much national recognition.
Jack Elway and Claude Gilbert brought the Spartans some renown. Elway brought the team to its first legitimate bowl appearance in 1981 and Gilbert kept the train rolling with back-to-back 10-2 seasons in 1986 and 1987.
Ever since that time, this team hasn’t had much to write home about. In recent years, the 2012 team was amazing because of how quickly Mike MacIntyre turned around the program. He was head coach of the program for just three seasons, but took the Spartans from a 1-12 team to an 11-2 squad. He took the Colorado job afterwards and San Jose State has been looking for the next diamond in the rough ever since.
