After gradual improvement every year for four seasons, Willie Taggart left for greener pastures this year. Losing the coach who led your program to its best record is a tough ask, but the Bulls may have knocked it out of the park. South Florida brought in Charlie Strong after Texas fired him and the administration believes that he will be the one to take this program to even greater heights.

Under Willie Taggart, the Bulls became the best offense in the conference. Although many observers wanted to give that honor to a team like Tulsa or Houston, it was South Florida who boasted the 7th best Offensive S&P+ in the American.
That offense should again be one of the best in the conference. Quinton Flowers has proven to be a great dual threat quarterback and the Bulls have a handful of young runners that can replace the production of Marlon Mack. The receivers are alright, but the running game is what drives this team.
No one will question Strong’s defensive chops. He presided over some great Florida defenses and had quality defenses as the head coach at Louisville too. Although he couldn’t really get it going in Texas, there’s no doubt he knows what it takes on that side of the ball.
The Bulls had one of the worst ten defenses in the country last season. They gave up 482 yards a game on average and were abysmal against both the pass and run. The defense has talent and Strong should be able to achieve much better results in his first year.
There’s a chance that the Bulls can run the gable with this schedule. South Florida gets its three toughest opponents at home and the most daunting road trip will be against its in-state rival UCF. If the Bulls can get by Illinois and Temple in back-to-back weeks in September, they should be favored the rest of the season.

Jim Leavitt led the program through its first decade in big boy football and would probably still be the coach if he wasn’t forced out. He built the program from the ground up and made them an immediate contender in the lower levels of FBS football. However, he was pushed out after it was discovered he hit one of his players in the locker room during halftime of a game in 2009.
The Skip Holtz era didn’t go so well for the program. Holtz was out after three seasons and left the cupboard bare on the way out. In his final year he blew through redshirts to try to save his own skin and made the rebuilding job for Taggart that much more difficult.
Taggart slowly rebuilt the program from the ground up through recruiting and installing his scheme. He left Strong a bevy of talent to work with and the program is in a better state than almost any other American team. The Bulls should be the favorites to win the AAC in 2017.
