NCAAF Virginia Cavaliers Wagering PredictionNCAA Football Betting Online: The Virginia Cavaliers did not fare well in Bronco Mendenhall’s first season as coach in 2016, going 2-10. While expectations aren’t sky-high, the hope is to take a step forward as Mendenhall tries to build a strong program. A bowl game is not expected and even five wins would be a nice improvement for a Cavaliers team which is missing the type of talent to compete with the better teams in its conference.

There will be a lot of Virginia’s hopes riding on quarterback Kurt Benkert. He was inconsistent a season ago, throwing for 2,552 yards and 21 touchdowns but with 11 interceptions while completing only 56 percent of his passes.

Benkert hurt his throwing shoulder in the third game of the season, which may have affected him. The Cavaliers are hoping a healthy season will help improve his performance. Virginia must make up for the loss of standout running back Taquan Mizzell, who was the only player in ACC history to accumulate both 1,500 rushing and 1,500 receiving yards in his career.

The Cavaliers had a poor defense a season ago, allowing 33.9 points per game. They do get back nine of 11 starters, although it remains to be seen if that’s a good thing or not in 2017.

The Cavaliers are in the midst of a drought, as they haven’t made it to a bowl game since 2011. That was their only winning season dating back to 2008 and Mendenhall hopes to find some traction in his second year.

There are some solid teams in the ACC this year and Virginia may be on the wrong side of several lopsided losses. The hope is to take baby steps forward. While a bowl game would be a lofty goal, it may not be too realistic unless both sides of the ball improve.

The Cavaliers seem to be looking at another losing season, although improving on the two-win total of a year ago seems likely since it is such a low bar to clear.
