2014 BMW Masters Winner - Marcel Siem chips in to win BMW Masters playoff

Marcel Siem took the lead for the first time on the 16th hole Sunday and figured two pars would be enough for him to win the BMW Masters.

Siem, who started the day trailing Levy by five strokes, had a two-metre putt for victory in regulation play, but pushed the ball wide of the hole. Undeterred, he then compensated for his missed chance by spectacularly chipping in for a birdie at the first extra hole, the 18th, with his rivals on the green and waiting to putt. Neither player could match him.

It was a thrilling climax to a week that attracted 47,900 spectators and finished bathed in sunshine. Put simply, Siem made hay while the sun shone. It was his fourth win on the European Tour and it moved him from 53rd in the Race to Dubai to 4th.

2013 BMW Masters Winner - Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano wins BMW Masters

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano called it the perfect win, even though his final hole Sunday to win the BMW Masters was anything but perfect.

Fernandez-Castano chipped in from across the green for birdie on the tough 17th hole at Lake Malaren to build a three-shot lead. Then, he let memories of Jean Van de Velde's collapse creep into his head, and only when the 33-year-old Spaniard holed a 2-foot putt for double bogey did he exhale.

He still closed with a 4-under 68 for a one-shot win over Francesco Molinari (64) and Thongchai Jaidee (66). Luke Guthrie, the 23-year-old American playing in Asia for the first time, didn't make a birdie until the 13th hole and closed with a 71 to finish alone in fourth, two shots behind.

Fernandez-Castano gave Spain its first European Tour win this year, extending the streak to 20 years of at least one Spanish victory.

But this was more for him than country. The victory gets Fernandez-Castano into the HSBC Champions next week in Shanghai, critical for him to stay in the hunt for the Race to Dubai. He moved up from No. 35 to No. 4 in the standings, and the World Golf Championship offers $8.5 million in prize money.

2012 BMW Masters Winner - Hanson wins BMW Masters in China

Peter Hanson held off a late charge from Rory McIlroy to win the $7m BMW Masters on Sunday by a single stroke at Lake Malaren after carding a five-under-par round of 67 for a 21-under-par total of 267.

When world No1 McIlroy, who had started uncharacteristically slowly on Sunday, eagled the 15th and followed with a birdie at 16 to pull within two strokes, it seemed the Swede might wobble.

But superb up-and-downs from a bunker on 15, the rough at 16 and another bunker on the treacherous short 17th kept McIlroy at bay and enabled Hanson to pocket a winner's cheque of $1.16m despite dropping his only shot of the day at the final hole.

Earlier the Swede, who was the only man on the victorious European team to draw a Ryder Cup blank four weeks ago, got off to the ideal start when he birdied the short par-four second to move to 17 under while playing partner McIlroy dropped shots at the fourth and the fifth.

Hanson, who had led the Northern Irishman by a single stroke overnight, had suddenly stretched it to four strokes inside five holes.

The morning air was heavy with pollution and the US consulate's air quality index was hovering between the highest warning level of "hazardous" and the next worst "very unhealthy". McIlroy, who complained of headaches after his 67 last Thursday because of the lack of clean air, seemed to be feeling the effects again early on as he slid back to 13 under.
