2015 Joburg Open Winner - Sullivan wins European Tour's Joburg Open
Andy Sullivan won his second European Tour title in South Africa in just over a month after closing with a 6-under 66 for a 17-under total and a two-shot victory at the Joburg Open on Sunday.
Sullivan's second European win came in the same city as his first after he won the South African Open in Johannesburg in January.
The Englishman began Sunday three shots behind leader Wallie Coetsee at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, but went top after five birdies in his front nine on the East Course. He only made two birdies on the second nine but that was enough to hold off a big group of chasers down the home stretch. Sullivan hit a six-under-par final round of 66 to win the Joburg Open by two shots on 17 under.
Sullivan finished two clear of a five-way tie for second made up of Kevin Phelan, Jaco van Zyl, Anthony Wall, David Howell and Coetsee.
Sullivan and fellow Englishmen Wall and Howell also claimed the three places at the British Open at St. Andrews that were on offer.
The 28-year-old Sullivan is making a habit of big final-day moves after charging up the leaderboard to beat Charl Schwartzel in a playoff at the South African Open for his first career title six weeks ago.
2014 Joburg Open Winner - Coetzee wins European Tour's Joburg Open
George Coetzee closed with a 6-under-par 66 Sunday and won the European Tour's Joburg Open by three strokes. It was the first European Tour victory for Coetzee, who has a total of six wins across professional tours. It also was the fifth consecutive year and sixth time in the eight years of the Joburg Open that a South African won the event.
Coetzee was bogey free through Sunday's play and finished at 19-under 268 for the tournament.
Justin Walters, who was tied for the lead after Saturday's third round, was 1-over 73 in the final round and ended up tied for second at 16-under. Tyrell Hatton, with a final-round 66, and Jin Jeong, who shot 71 Sunday, were also at 16-under.
Thomas Aiken, who was tied with Walters going into the final round, had six bogeys in a 2-over 74 and tied for fifth.
2013 Joburg Open Winner - Sterne coasts to comfortable Joburg Open win
South African Richard Sterne took charge of Sunday's fourth round to coast to victory in the Joburg Open, his first win on golf's European Tour since 2008.
Sterne carded an eight-under-par 64 for a tournament total of 260, seven shots ahead of second-placed Charl Schwartzel.
After finishing second in the Dubai Desert Classic last weekend, Sterne got his reward for some consistent golf that featured just one dropped shot in his four rounds at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.
Sterne went into the final round tied on 19 under par with compatriot Trevor Fisher Jnr, but the latter carded a disappointing 73 to finish in tied-sixth position.
Schwartzel birdied 17 and 18 to card a 66 to take second place with a 20-under-par tournament total of 267. That took him ahead of Portugal's Ricardo Santos, who matched Sterne's round on Sunday with a 64 to finish his tournament on 19 under par and tied third with George Coetzee (67) and Chilean Filipe Aguilar.
The 2013 Joburg Open is Sterne's sixth European Tour victory and moves him into the top 60 in the world rankings ahead of the WGC-Accenture Match Play championship in Arizona starting on February 20.
2012 Joburg Open Winner - Grace Claims Joburg Open Win
SA's Branden Grace yesterday showed nerves of steel in a dramatic final round at the Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, holding on to a one-stroke lead to claim the R2, 1m check and his first European Tour victory.
The 23-year-old, who had won only one event prior to this tournament since turning professional in 2007, entered the final round with a three-stroke cushion over England's Richard Finch and SA's George Coetzee at 17 under.
But while Finch and Coetzee battled on the challenging East Course yesterday, Grace held his nerve and overcame a bogey on the par-three second, which he balanced with a birdie on the par-four ninth, and the pressure of knowing that England's Jamie Elson was waiting in the players' lounge only one stroke behind. It was his 50th European Tour event.
The victory also continued SA's successful run in the European co-sanctioned events, as it marked the fourth victory by a local player in the past six European Tour events.
In a solid final round, Grace was cautious and settled for a level-par round, although he could be considered a little unlucky as several close putts failed to find the bottom of the hole, which would have eased some of the pressure.
2011 Joburg Open Winner
Charl Schwartzel successfully defended his Joburg Open title with a four-stroke victory on the East Course at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club on Sunday.
Schwartzel closed with a 67 for a total of 19 under par 265, following Ernie Els (Heineken Classic 2002, 2003 and 2004) and Trevor Immelman (South African Open 2003 and 2004) as the third South African to defend a title on the European Tour.
Garth Mulroy finished second on 15 under with a final round of 71, while Thomas Aiken was third on 14 under with a 72.
