HOW THEY GOT HERE
Iceland was never really favored to get to Euro 2016, but the fact of the matter is that this wasn't anything that was ever in doubt. The Icelanders qualified basically as early as possible, locking up a spot in this tournament on September 6, a day after England qualified and the same day the Czech Republic punched its ticket.
Iceland ended up finishing second in Group A, though it was pretty darn good at home. Sure, the team drew Kazakhstan at home and only drew against Latvia, but it also went on the road and beat the Dutch, a shocking result which essentially represented the end of it all for the favorite to win Group A.
Of late, the results haven't been great for Iceland. The team has lost four of its last five matches, and it has just one win since January 2015, that coming on the road against Finland. Losing to the United States wasn't a shock in Carson. What was stunning was a 2-1 loss in Abu Dhabi against the UAE.
KEY PLAYERS
There aren't a heck of a lot of players on this team who are playing major club soccer. Aron Gunnarsson and Gylfi Por Sigurosson are both playing in England. Gunnarsson is with Cardiff City, while Sigurosson is faced with the task of trying to help save Swansea City in the Premier League.
The interesting player on this team is Kolbeinn Sigporsson. He's scored 18 goals in just 35 matches for Iceland. He's not a guarantee to be on this roster, but for a team who needs offense, he could be a good bench player. Eiour Guojohnsen has 25 goals in his career for Iceland across 84 matches, but at 37 years old, he won't be able to play the full 90 minutes in most matches.
Of course, Guojohnsen isn't the oldest player on this team. In all likelihood, Gunnleifur Gunnleifsson is going to be the team's net minder, and he's 40 and clearly playing in his first and last major international competition.

Iceland's defense is going to be the key in this tournament. Scoreless draws are good results across this competition, and in a group with Austria, Hungary and Portugal, that's entirely possible. Scoring goals though, could end up being a huge challenge. These are defensive-minded teams for the most part in Group F, and that could lend itself to needing some moments of real brilliance offensively.
Can Iceland really find a way to put a couple goals in the back of the net in its first major international competition? We aren't so sure.
It's basically a 50/50 proposition whether the Icelanders get into the Round of 16 or not, but we don't like they're odds. It feels as if the Iceland/Hungary match is going to be for the right to finish third in Group F, but if that match ends in a draw as many will expect to be the case, both teams are very likely to be left out of the knockout rounds.
