HOW THEY GOT HERE
Ireland had to face a really tough task in qualifying for the Euros as well. The Green Army had to take on Poland and Germany, but to their credit, they hung in there, even taking four points from the World Cup champs in their two meetings.
Still, Ireland was destined for a third place finish from the start in Group D. Beating up Gibraltar was easy, and though a match at Scotland was ultimately lost, while the return fixture in Dublin was drawn, there was still more than enough talent on this side to reach the playoffs.
Once there, Ireland pulled off a bit of an upset. Bosnia and Herzegovina was always the favored side of the two, but a shockingly dominant 2-0 win at home in the second leg of that competition saw it through to the Euros.
KEY PLAYERS
The offense is pretty much going to come from Robbie Keane up front. He's one of the most recognized Irish players in their history with his 143 Caps and 67 career goals, and he's still got the talent at 35 years old to carry this team to wins.
The Green Army though, is not just a one-man band.
Shane Long has been promising up front all year long for Southampton, and he could be a threat in this tournament as well. James McCarthy has had a rough season at Everton, but he's still one of the most talented midfielders on the roster.
The real key though, is John O'Shea. He's the vice-captain of this team, and for good reason. His season at Sunderland has been insanely tough, and he's not going to likely be able to keep the Black Cats from avoiding the drop this term. O'Shea has donned a green and orange shirt 109 times in his career, but there's a point that O'Neill might have to pull him out of the lineup. We just hope for everyone's sake that Euro 2016 isn't that point.

Ireland is going to really be tested tactically in this tournament. This isn't a speedy enough team, nor it is a traditionally physical side either. That said, there's a lot of heart on the pitch, and we've seen this team come up with some unlikely results in the past.
Still, being one of the eight teams eliminated in the group stage is the most likely result. Ireland will be an underdog against all three of Belgium, Italy and Sweden, and without an upset against one of those three to get three points, the luck of the Irish will have run out.
It would be fitting though, if Ireland did advance as a third place team. There's a good chance that the next team on tap at that point would be France. The last time it played on French soil, Ireland was knocked out of World Cup qualifying in a playoff. The cause? A Thierry Henry goal in Paris in extra time on a ball which was clearly a handball before it was struck into the back of the net. Ireland always felt slighted for that result, and you can bet if that does happen to be the Round of 16 duel it gets should it get that far, emotions will run very, very high.
