After a hot start that got them ranked number one in the country the Michigan Wolverines have come crashing back to earth. On Saturday the Maize and Blue face a dangerous up and coming Maryland Terrapins team that is now nationally ranked. The “Farmageddon” rivalry between the Iowa State Cyclones and Big 12 leading Kansas State Wildcats looms as one of the biggest games of the season. The Kansas Jayhawks may have been overrated at the start of the season but they remain a good value at Allen Fieldhouse where they will seek revenge for an earlier loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers. After being pronounced dead the Nebraska Cornhuskers pulled a Lazarus to beat Minnesota and can now jumpstart the March Madness quest against a struggling Northwestern Wildcats team. Let’s take a look at college basketball’s best bets for Saturday.
#24 Maryland Terrapins at #6 Michigan Wolverines, noon ET, FOX
Not that long ago the Michigan Wolverines were known as one of the top offensive teams in the land. Now their rock-ribbed defense is among the very best in the land but their offense has become completely discombobulated. Maryland is one of the hottest teams on the board and powered by freshman Bruno Fernando’s 14.6 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Maryland has come away with the money in seven out of their last ten games as away dogs. Meanwhile Michigan has been operating in the red as a home chalk recently. The Wolverines have covered just five of their last 11 games laying points on their home court. Maryland has come away with the cash in their last two visits to Crisler Center. There is an Upset Alert at Ann Arbor, Michigan!
#23 Iowa State Cyclones at #18 Kansas State Wildcats, 4 p.m. ET, ESPN2
Kansas State is led by a defense ranked fourth in the country for points allowed. The Wildcats have also paid in seven of their last eight games. Iowa State has cooled off with three losses against the spread in their last four games. K-State forward Dean Wade is an asset with 13.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Despite being a good overall value on the college basketball betting board Iowa State has paid in just four of their last 13 games getting points away from home. Meanwhile the Wildcats have covered three straight games as home chalks. Iowa State has not found the Little Apple a hospitable place to travel to. In fact, the Cyclones have come away with the cash in just five of their last 17 visits to Kansas State.
West Virginia Mountaineers at #14 Kansas Jayhawks, 4 p.m. ET, ESPN
The Kansas Jayhawks have not forgotten their 65-64 loss at West Virginia on January 19 and now have their shot at revenge. Forward Dedric Lawson looms large for KU with 19.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. The Mounties have struggled to bring value as a road dog as evidenced by their record of 2-5 against the spread in their last seven in that role. Meanwhile the Jayhawks have had better than expected value as a home chalk with five payouts in their last eight in that role. West Virginia has definitely been in the “Phog” of Allen Fieldhouse where they have covered just two of their last six visits against the Jayhawks.
Northwestern Wildcats at Nebraska Cornhuskers, 8:30 p.m. ET, BTN
Northwestern has lost seven of their last ten games on the board and will bring the nation’s 301st ranked offense to Nebraska. Nebraska boasts the nation’s 18th ranked defense for a huge matchup advantage. The Wildcats have been pretty clawless as a road dog with just four payouts in their last 13 in that situation. Despite their recent slump Nebraska has lost just six out of their last 20 games laying points at home.
