Head coach Jay Wright’s Villanova Wildcats may be March Madness material yet again but a repeat national title will be difficult in this rebuilding season. However, on Sunday they will face a Xavier Musketeers team that is clearly overmatched. The Cincinnati Bearcats have been a top AAC contender all season but have suffered from a value drop in recent games. In contrast the UConn Huskies have actually been a better bet than what meets the eye. One of the great rivalries in sports is renewed on Sunday when the Michigan Wolverines host the Michigan State Spartans, AKA “Little Brother.” All told there are some surprise values on the board for Sunday college basketball.
#17 Villanova Wildcats vs. Xavier Musketeers, 1:30 p.m. ET, CBS
It has been a year of red ink for Xavier this year as evidenced by the fact that they have covered only nine of 27 games so far. Xavier has paid in just five out of 15 home games and just three of their last nine matchups overall. On the other hand, Villanova has covered 17 out of 27 games this year and has paid in seven of their last ten most recent matchups. Nova has paid in six of nine away games on the season. Jay Wright’s Wildcats have totally owned the cashier’s cage in their head to head series with Xavier. Overall Nova has paid in 11 out of their last 12 meetings between these teams. Four of the last seven games in this matchup have gone over the total. Villanova has not had any problem consistently getting the money at Xavier. The Wildcats have covered four of their last five visits to Xavier with four of those five games also going over the total. Overall Xavier has dreadful metrics of 202nd in the country for scoring offense and 186th for points allowed. Phil Booth has maintained Wright’s trait of having good guard play. Both is averaging just under 19 points per game.
Cincinnati Bearcats vs. UConn Huskies, 2 p.m. ET, ESPN
Cincinnati has paid in just three out of five away games this year and only one of their last five games overall. Connecticut may not be a strong contender but they have been an exceptional betting value at home with 11 payouts in 14 games. UConn is also in good form recently with six payouts in their last eight games. Despite their recent struggles UConn has gotten the money in two of their last three games against Cincinnati with two of those games also going under the total. Connecticut has covered four of their last six home games against the Bearcats with four of the last five meetings in this series at UConn going under the total. The Huskies have responded well to first year head coach Dan Hurley and have played far better than expected.
#10 Michigan State Spartans vs. #7 Michigan Wolverines, 3:45 p.m. ET, CBS
Michigan State has been one of the top values in college basketball as a road team as shown by seven covers in 10 games in that role. Sparty is also in good recent form with three payouts in their last four games. Michigan State has had surprising value at Michigan with three payouts in their last five visits. Four of those five games went over the total. In fact, the road team has gotten the money in six of the last nine games between Sparty and the Maize and Blue. Seven of the last nine in this matchup have gone over the total. Of great concern to the M Men is an offense that ranks 248th in the country. Sure, the Wolverines have the nation’s third ranked defense but this lack of balance does not match up well against a State team that plays a complete full court game.
