The end of February means one thing to college basketball fans: March Madness is here. Thursday, February 29 marks the final regular season weekday game for many programs as they get set for championship week with teams on the bubble looking to increase their chances of a trip to the dance while others are hoping for a major upset to earn an automatic bid. Playing a conference tournament seems foolish to me especially for one-bid leagues, and there are quite a few. A team could dominate during the regular season finish undefeated only to have one bad game in the tournament, and poof, they’re done. Oh well, anything for the mighty dollar, I suppose.
The schedule for Feb. 29 is heavily slanted toward teams in the western part of the country with matchups involving the Big West, Mountain West, Big Sky, WCC and a few from the Pac-12. Undefeated in WCC play and riding a 15-game winning streak with payouts in 10 of those games, the Saint Mary’s Gaels visit the Pepperdine Waves for an 11 p.m. ET tipoff on CBS Sports Network. Cal State Northridge is the most profitable team on Thursday’s schedule cashing out over 74 percent of the time. The Matadors host UC Irvine with a payout already against the Big West co-leaders. I had a tough time with last week’s college basketball parlay picks so I think I’m going to scale it down a bit this time. I won’t get into the ugly details but if you went against my selections you experienced a nice windfall. I mentioned a few games above and I’m going to tap into them a little more using them to make my three-team parlay.
Northridge has enjoyed success on the court recently while being on a major heater at the betting window. The Matadors have won five of their last seven games while going 6-1 ATS in that span. Going 20-7 ATS overall has them as the second biggest money maker in college basketball behind only the Minnesota Gophers. And the Matadors earned the cash in an earlier meeting with UCI staying within the 13-point spread in a 77-72 road loss at the end of January.
CSN has a short history at the major college level but is enjoying one of its finest campaigns that includes a non-conference win at UCLA. They are poised to win 20 games for just the fourth time in 34 years at the highest level with a balanced attack that has four players averaging in double figures.
It’s hard not to like Saint Mary’s with the success the program has enjoyed while being pitted against one of the country’s best for supremacy in the WCC. With a Saturday tilt against Gonzaga on the slate this could be a prime letdown spot for the Gaels, but I don’t think they’re going to let the lead slip through their hands. And just two weeks ago they slaughtered Pepperdine 103-59 easily covering the 19-point spread. In fact, the Gaels have cashed out the last four times they were favored by double-digits, which will certainly be the case on Thursday.
Something has to give in the Big Ten matchup between Michigan and Rutgers. The teams have combined to lose their last eight games with Michigan 0-5 during that spell while going 2-9 ATS in the last 11 games. It’s been a huge drop for the once proud program and clubs that have been on the other end for years are taking out their frustration. Rutgers did that earlier this season beating the Wolverines 69-59 as a 4.5-point road underdog. Rutgers has proven to be much better at home with 11 of their 14 wins coming in their gym making them worth backing in this contest.
